So is McClatchy about to drop the hammer?

Up until now, I had avoided this thread on purpose. I just couldn't stand to look at another discussion of this topic, as it applies to yet another chain, and still more jobs/careers.

I guess the urgency of things in our business, combined, perhaps, with a certain amount of morbid curiosity, finally conspired to kick down my resistance, however, and I've just taken a look.

    I wish I hadn't.

I'm sorry to all involved or otherwise affected.

Come to think of it, that probably would be all of us. What a (another) sad day.

I heard today from a guy with Smithfield that their publisher, who has been there a while, was let go. He was the only one who was cut from the herald. He said there was going to be one supervisor at the N@O who oversees all their smaller papers....surprise

Three newsroom staffers, nine total, out at the Sun News in Myrtle Beach. One was a friend from college. :(

Just got this, may already be on here, I haven't gone back through three pages:
Tacoma is losing 84 jobs, five in the newsroom. Buyouts are first, then layoffs if necessary. It's a 13 percent cut.

Does anyone know, are they doing layoffs by reverse seniority (i.e. last in, first out)? Or is there some other criteria?

Every paper is different. For most, it depends on the makeup of the volutary buyouts.

It is mixed. I've heard of some older guys -- yet obviously there are some here who've said they were relatively new.

So sorry to hear about Sturb and Hood. I've known both of those guys since I was a little kid.

Good luck to all. This blog appears to have the paper-by-paper breakdown with individual links to each paper's story:

So the two largest cities in North Carolina, with a combined population of 1 million, are combining their sports sections.

Mark this decision down among the 10 dumbest ever made in journalism history.

I know the cuts are horrible everywhere, but how do you adjust to losing 250, 17 percent of your entire operation, like Miami is going to have to?
