So is McClatchy about to drop the hammer?

Someone send the CEO an email and ask him how much he and his underlings are going to have their salary trimmed in the pinch. Someone send me his email. I'll do it. Not like I work for McClatchy or anything.

Am told 84 in Tacoma -- five in editorial with four unfilled reporter spots... Not sure if or how many of those are in sports...

This is what really burns the hell out of me, too. Do any of these top executives think their lack of a hand-to-mouth existence might mean they could afford to trim their salaries a bit to save some of the people on the floor who bust their butts and need every single dime of their measly check?

Understood, none of this is taught in Finance or Economics 101. But Joe Williams, as usual on these type of threads, nailed it. Throw the blue-collar help in front of the train to make sure those publishers and high-level executives can pay for their third beach house, sixth luxury vehicle and the fourth yacht.

Good luck to everyone affected by this latest death knell to the profession.

As I said on Page One, Pruitt will probably earn another $5 million bonus for his "leadership" during these "difficult times."
Between Obama and McClain, I'd vote for the guy who vows legislation where the CEO and board of directors suffer financially when the companies they run suffer.
So I suppose I won't be voting in November.

As the old saying goes, "When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."
In this case, all newspaper execs have is layoffs and staff reductions so everybody looks like a line on the spread sheet.

Buddy called me back from Ft. Worth. They'll lose 3 sportswriters from voluntary buyouts. Two have been laid off (involuntary), one of whom he says is John Sturbin, their NASCAR writer.

FWST is losing two writers _ auto racing's John Sturbin, outdoors Bob Hood. Both have been with the paper more than 20 years. Neither was voluntary. Both were called in Monday and among the 17 employees told to clean out their desks.
Another writer is leaving the biz so the mandatory shrinking by 3 writing positions has been met. However, other writers in sports and other employees may take the involuntary buyouts (2 weeks salary for every year of service, capped at 13 years service).

Wow, this sucks. That any layoffs are tenure-based is even worse. Good luck to all.
