Well, I would guess their "Sportsman" is more about "man" than "sports."

The criteria is who among plausible candidates do the editors think will sell the most magazines.

Exactly. Which makes it different from being up for a Trophy honoring the most outstanding player in college football. Seems pretty specific.

Ad portfolio x accomplishment + past street sales when you were on the cover.

Agreed, though sometimes the (b) can include rationalizing a solid decision, which only amplifies (a).

If a reporter has a vote for an award, I think the readers deserve to know how he or she voted. No need for a column or blog, just post or print the votes.

We did that when our SE voted in the AP football poll. We published his weekly ballot next to the actual AP poll so readers could compare.

    Agreed.

But when you cast a ballot on the website these days, you have to agree to keep it confidential until the award is given.

Will Winston's victory be the largest ever? If NIU loses tonight, who will be the other two guys that get invited to NYC? I'm assuming only three will get the invite this year.

Could make the same arguments about FSU missing the best teams from Coastal division, racking up stats against weak competition, etc.

I agree ACC is a step better than MAC -- but then again Jordan Lynch is just looking for a trip to NYC; not to win anything -- and ACC has escaped criticism for years for being slightly better than the Big East and wtf they're called now.

Everyone knows the Heisman curse, I'm wondering who was the last winner whose team lost their last game before the trophy was awarded.
