Someone at the NY Times has a serious girl-crush on Elizabeth Warren

The problem is that its not going away. She hasn't been able to answer the questions, and it's making her look like a phoney.

I would love her to be in the Senate, but I wish she was running for a different seat. Scott Brown is my kind of Republican.

A whole 150 anonymous Cherokees, except for two spokespeople. Why does an organization of 150 need two spokespeople.

It must be legit since they have a Website and Facebook page.

As an aside, the Cherokees have had a hell of a time lately deciding who is and isn't part of the tribe.

  8. I'm surprised this hasn't gained more traction with voters.

At best, Warren (and the voters who continue to support her) show an incredible naivete about what it means to call oneself a Native American. Yes, there are millions of white Americans who have "family lore" about Native ancestry. It's now a cute, trendy thing to claim, and I guarantee if you ask a roomful of white people, you'll have a handful that claim that somewhere in their lineage "they've heard" they might be part Cherokee or something.

But to make it a large part of one's identity, to claim it so vigorously without *any* tribal affiliation or even attempting to join a tribe is quite another thing entirely.

Why do Native Americans guard their citizenship and their tribal rolls so zealously? Because there are HUGE advantages to being classified as a Native American today. And the tribes rightly seek to root out the Johnny-come-latelies who had no interest in their alleged heritage before it was considered trendy, or in the case of Warren, advantageous to her career.

Doubly confusing here because the Cherokee don't use conventional blood quantum fractions to determine inclusion.

Wouldn't be all that confusing if she had any evidence beyond high cheekbones.

I am 1/8 Cherokee the hard way ... one great-great-grandparent, each on my dad and mom's side.

Good thing they were the best-hung Native Americans. Otherwise I'd never know my heritage.

Wasn't referring to her case specifically, but to Cherokee genealogy generally. As I posted farther back, there's some question as to what would even constitute evidence. http://www.allthingscherokee.com/articles_gene_040101.html
