Spanish basketball team racist, culturally insensitive or just a bunch of fools?

This pic was stupid. Stupid. But how many of us laugh at "Christmas Story" and "fa-ra-ra-ra-ra, ra-ra-ra-ra"? I flashed back on that the other nite when NBC had a feature on Chinese language schools in which the students serenaded the American tv crew with "Jingle Bells".

Doesn't excuse this, but let's keep glass houses in mind and be grateful the Spaniards didn't choose to display the "small penis" stereotype.

Look, some of my best friends are stupid threads.

But I'm afraid that I'd have to say that this thread has gotten pretty stupid.

Maybe Spain just has different standards of political correctness than, say, both Tim Robbins and Rush Limbaugh.

The Spanish team's photo is insensitive but is pretty diluted in that they are a minority compared to the 1.3 billion Chinese in Mainland China.

The main concern arises when something like this is sent out about a minority class in the population.

Did Shaquille O'Neal have any comment?

So racial prejudice is okay so long as it's directed towards the majority class? Can't wait to see what you have planned for any excursions into African nations.

I'm not condoning it, I was just pointing out that the effect is much less.

The effect when the majority makes fun of the minority is much different than when the minority does it to the majority; does not mean that either is okay.

But the way you coached it -- "the main concern" -- made it sound like we should start paying serious attention when this type of thing is directed towards a minority. You're right in that the effect is blunted some when it's being fought from the underdog position, but that wouldn't make my going to Beijing and making the ol' pee-pee in your Coke joke any less offensive or troublesome.

The word "spic" (don't use that word, kids) predates Hispanic.

The word Hispanic was created during the Nixon Administration to come up with a category for Spanish-speaking peoples, although a fifth or sixth-generation Mexican could be classified as Hispanic. The term doesn't count people from Spain.

The word spic predates the word Hispanic.

I saw this on the news and my reaction was that it was probably a bad idea. Then I asked my wife. She said people need to get a sence of humor and that she wasn't offended. So, no biggie. I doubt anyone in China cared.

There's 1.3 billion people there. Mathematically speaking, there's a good chance that at least one person doing anything you can think of, including caring.
