Hey anon - I work at an AOL shop. Been up to the Dulles office several times when they're brought out a bar, food, etc.
Morale was terrific, outstanding, way high.

    Until Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The point? I'm very glad things are going so well for you. I truly hope it continues. Things were going fan-tab-u-lous for me and I wanted it to continue the rest of my days.

Then, with no warning, it stopped.

Keep working hard, keep having fun (though tone down the smug a bit), keep hoping it lasts. And keep your resume updated and nearby. Your name is written in erasable ink like everyone else's. Don't let yourself think for one second the smile at 4:29/cry at 4:31 thing can't happen to you. It can.

That's simplistic but has some legitimacy. ESPN of course is the best at this, from Wilbon and Reilly down to the no-name (by comparison) NFL bloggers that make the radio rounds. Almost every writer is leveraged on radio/TV.

I remember a few years ago when the arguments here were about whether X columnist was losing their print edge by doing so much TV work. As it turned out, for some that was a survival move.

Free drinks definitely means a business is doing well. Sorry for doubting you. I've also read some of the horror stories about Patch.

Now it *definitely* reminds me of the Coaches Aid posts.

Bleacher Report knows how to market itself.

The quality of writing is as bad as it gets. But you tell them what teams you like and it emails you stories on those teams daily. I can see everything without having to look for it.

To add to this: I now work for a nonprofit that advocates to the state government for a profession. A Patch story came up in our issues meeting last week and I was the only person in the room who knew what it was, because of the discussion here. And the only reason the story even crossed our desks is that it was RIDDLED with errors.

My biggest issue with Fanhouse is that while they had an incredible staff, I don't think any of the columnists fall into the "must-read" category for non-journalists. Don't misunderstand that, because I am the biggest Greg Couch fan there is and I think Olson is tremendously talented, but none have the draw (for better or worse) as a Whitlock, a Posnanski, a Plaschke, Krieger etc...

I think that hurt them a lot.

I think you understand why people would think so, though.

Ha! What a jerk. I love the defensiveness. Understandable, since no one likes to hear anything that makes them a bit nervous. "How DARE you act like this won't last forever!!! I left newspapers for this, and . . . OH, I guess you might have a point. So you suck!"

Lot of rocking going on in those Patch offices. Hell yeah! Hey man, is that Freedom (from unhappy workplaces) Rock? Well, turn it up, bro!

Now, does it rock like in-their-prime Metallica? Or just like current-era Aerosmith?

The talent at Fanhouse was the top 1 percent of the profession.

The talent at Patch is anybody who was willing to work in any of those shitty little towns.

Anon, no one is picking on you. There's no reason to get "out of here for good."

In fact, if I were you, I'd stick around and network. There are lot's of good journalists here.

I should have paid closer attention to the coffee machine thread.
