Any time Lono gives job hunting advice (here or elsewhere) it's a must read.

Patch in our area is kind of spotty. I guess it depends on local news cycle. You could go weeks and find just fluff like Aunt Tilley celebrating her 92nd birthday.

Kind of find restaurant reviews comical and pretty spot on. Going to be hard to generate ad revenue from some establishments with reviews like these:

    "STAY AWAY!

The food is simply ok, but the package around Sole is so offensive- from the arrogance of the wait staff to the ambiance which is colored by essentially ear-splitting noise. The waiters are so pushy with an odor of self-importance that this place is too cool for the clientele...not worth the prices or the hassle, at all."

Should note that said reviews come from the readership.

The New York Times liked it when it opened -- 12 years ago!

But hey, if a reader wants to rip a restaurant, I guess Patch will print it.

How about taking your own reviews to Yelp where they belong.

    Thank you.

But I'm just trying to help others keep their eyes opens.

IMHO, there are a lot of folks who look at the world like they would like it to be, not how it really is.

And that's a dangerous attitude to have in these perilous times.

I totally agree. That's why your advice is so useful.

I understand why anon believes in Patch. (S)he has too.

Others who aren't so invested, can look at it more objectively. And, whether you're at Patch, or anywhere else, you need to be able to do that and be prepared for you next move.

The New York Times piece was (surprise) excellent.

It's fine to be really excited about your Patch job. If I were making 40K, I would be too. But you've got to understand you are taking an enormous gamble working for them.

A post that attracts 500 page views is a wild success. Yeah, I don't see it working out for them.

If these guys are so smart, why are they paying $40k when they could get the same people for a lot less?

In this day and age, every job is an enormous gamble.

I'm not understanding the "enormous gamble" part for many.

A few people I know are doing this. They took buyouts or were laid off, and they got this job. They didn't leave the New York Times to go work for Patch.

If it works, great. If not, they got paid for the length of time Patch was in existence. I suppose if they turned down other opportunities while working for Patch, then there's something lost. But for many right now, they're making money and (for the younger ones) building clips. And this is the opportunity they have.

Some of the Fanhouse guys took an enormous gamble leaving "secure" jobs (a relative term these days). But the Patch people, not many gambles taken there.
