It's about time JR left and got off the bus. Having worked for this dictator for many years it's not hard to imagine how relieved staff must be to know that they can now walk into a building without fear of tripping over his ego at every corner. Hopefully, retirement is in his future, although I'm not sure how he'll do being unable to micromanage.

Wow, I thought JR was universally respected.

I hope the new leadership at the Sportng News can change things so Super Bowl previews no longer arrive in the mailbox a week after the game. Maybe things have improved on that front since I let my subscription lapse four years ago. Always found it a good read; it just wasn't getting in my mailbox in a timely manner. And I used to read their fantasy sports stuff all the time until they started charging for it.

I understand that wanting the magazine to go beyond its trumpeted "Football-Basketball-Baseball-Hockey-NASCAR" coverage focus might be too much. In any event, the Sporting News just doesn't look to have the muscle to continue to compete in the land of SI and ESPN.

Trust me, they still have the same problem. This year, my Super Bowl preview arrived the Monday after the game.

My TSN arrives nearly every Thursday. Like clockwork. Its delivery is as dependable as SI's.

I'm sure your experience with JR was unique. He was a tremendous person to work for and helped me immensely -- even after I left the place. A classy individual. Good luck John, in whatever you decide.

I rarely have a problem with SI. TSN is more miss than hit for me when it comes to delivery.

My TSN comes nearly every Thursday, like clockwork. Not sure I would like the switch to a monthly, though. I love skimming through the weekly notes.

Got a surprise in my mailbox today: TSN's NFL draft preview edition.
Turns out it was sent to me to try and lure me back into the fold: I was a subscriber for 14 years before letting my subscription expire last fall.
The deal? $14.95 for 52 issues - plus a free TSN rain jacket.
No, I'm not interested, but it's interesting to see the depths of TSN's despair.
I sure as hell never got a free issue of SI or ESPN the Magazine unsolicited in the mail before I subscribed to them.

So SI resorts to shoe phones and team commemorative issues and ESPN had its cheezy commercials where it jumped in bed with athletes ... but they weren't desperate, right? Only Sporting News because it came up with a clever marketing scheme of actually sending an issue to people who might be interested.
Congrats to you for seeing through it, Red.
Woodward & Bernstein are on the line.

Any news about anybody leaving Sporting News? Going from St. Louis to Charlotte may not appeal to folks. Then again, looking for a job in this market ...

    And has D'Alessio hired anybody?
