Is this position still open? Checked SS website and the posting isn't there. It's been open for nearly a month, I can't imagine how many resumes it has gotten.

They haven't filled the last opening (in Orlando) either.

I heard last week the other position ended up being eliminated.

As the guy who posted something up above saying this position is still a great one, I must add this: The retrenchment of the Sun-Sentinel as a "competitive" paper has been extremely disheartening to a two-time employee and long-time (and still hanging in there, just not sure how much longer) reader.

You knew it was a bad sign when Tim still was soliciting resumes. This shouldn't be one of those gigs. This should be one in which he makes 10 calls, if necessary, to the top 10 on his columnist wish list. Clearly, it's not that. Too bad, too. They coulda been a contenda. TKO, 1HP.

That's exactly what happened with the college job in Orlando. They weren't paying enough to get the kind of person who you would expect to wind up with that gig. A gig like that should pay $70K easily and some believed the salary they were offering was $15K less than that and no moving expenses.

The Sun-Sentinel job used to pay $90K. There are beat writers in the South Florida area who make close to that or maybe even more than that. For that price, I don't see them getting an experienced columnist, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

  8. One of my boys just interviewed there. Hope he gets it. If I weren't in my current situation, I definitely would've put my hat in the ring.

It's my understanding that several top-flight people have inquired about the position.

    Drip,

I don't doubt that for a second. Who wouldn't want that gig? The question is whether that gig will pay enough to get a top-flight columnist. I don't think it will unless someone wants to move to South Florida so badly that they take a pay cut. That's why I think the person they hire will either be a beat writer or a columnist from a smaller paper.
