IIRC, Spartanburg and Greenville both took some kind of a hit from a relatively new weekly up in that area. Enough so that smaller papers were calling board meetings to warn employees about "The big, mean weekly" and how it could take away advertising dollars.

SCEditor has it right. Greenville had a vibrant sports section (and a pretty good overall paper) 10-15 years ago before Gannett arrived and crippled the focus and the operations. The paper's prep coverage, conceived by the long-departed Tom Layton, was some of the best in the country for a paper of its size. The section covered a wide variety of topics....from the ACC and SEC to NASCAR and golf....very well and had splendid feature writing. Today's section is a mere shadow of all that. Sports editor Bart Wright is a good guy but the department is micromanaged by the EE. I would avoid this place at all costs, despite the fact the area is a great place to live.

Does Bart still check in from the briefly-stated cafe?
