Though there have been plenty of layoffs through not filling positions at their Texas newspapers, granted, that's pretty much everywhere.

Oh, and the current upper management doesn't seem to comprehend how to cover sports, especially in a crazy market like that.

Abilene would not be the worst place to work. It's a good family town, has good sports and three colleges, I just think you have to know what you are getting into -- and that's a lot of work without a tremendous amount of support from above.

Pay's pretty good for a paper like that in the middle of nowhere as I recall... mostly considering the cost of living out there in the sticks.

I don't know what the SE gets, but its obviously more than the sports writers and I definitely recall being pretty impressed by their salary all things considered.

I guess there's a price for everyone's soul. Considering the type of hours you'll be expected to work, the salary probably isn't all that great.

But hey, that's the nature of the business.

I would guess the SE would make around 35k.

I would hope it's more than that. I've heard some of the staff writers are getting almost that much.

That's what I heard as well, but changed my post based on a PM I received.

Edit: The sender of said PM does not work at this paper, so take it for what it's worth.
