Managing Editor Louise C. Seals Steps Down Today

Louise C. Seals, managing editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch since
1994, announced today that she will retire to spend more time with her
family. She joined The Times-Dispatch in 1968.

"It's been a great run. I have done things and gone places I would not
have been able to without the support of The Times-Dispatch," said
Seals, who said her goodbyes to the newsroom today. "I've been thinking about retiring for awhile and am looking forward to spending time with my husband, in my garden and working out at the gym five days a week."

In 1997, she was named the National Communicator of Achievement by the National Federation of Press Women for excellence in communications and a lifetime of achievement. She was inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame in 2003. She served as treasurer for the Associated Press Managing Editors association and was twice elected a director. She also served as president of the Virginia Press Women in 1991-92 and as president of the Virginia Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 2001-02. Seals was treasurer, secretary and vice president of the Virginia Press Association in succession, concluding her term as vice president on June 30, 2006.

Looking back over the three-plus decades with this newspaper, Seals
indicated that she is proudest of her role in making The Times-Dispatch
more reflective of the community and of holding her ground when anyone tried to restrict access to information that belonged to the public.

"We're still not a perfect newspaper, but we're much more reflective of
this community. We've experimented, not for the sake of experimenting
but to make the newspaper more interesting for our readers and sometimes more challenging," she added.

Vice President and Executive Editor Glenn Proctor praised Seals for her
leadership in the newsroom and her dedication to Times-Dispatch readers. "She was an advocate for every reader, encouraging her staff to deliver compelling, accurate information every day," he said.

A search for her successor will begin immediately.

The last I heard, which was about a week and a half ago, there has not been an SE hire. Something could have changed since then, but that's the latest I had heard.

First of all, it was only about 240....second of all, the 4-wood was the future mother-in-law's. Get it straight.

The Little Birdie Newswire has relayed this info

Field of 8 outside and 3 inside has been trimmed to 3 and 3.
One source says only one inside person remains viable.
    Another says all three do.
None of the three has been given a second interview yet.
Names not known of the three outside candidates, visits will conclude in about two weeks.
    Definitely no offer yet.
Not real sure what's going on with sudden "retirement" of long-time managing editor.

Louise Seals, the out-going ME, is a pro and will be missed. At times she could be over bearing but its no secret that her style clashed with Proctor. Tom Silvestri, the new publisher, worked under her and beside her many years.
The paper is top rate but is in a bunker mentality mode right now. That's a shame because there are a lot of good people there.

Plenty of talent inside that building, and that's where the hire should be made from -- unless they're really trying to kill morale.

Then why haven't they done it already?

Heather Tucker, the associate sports editor and acting editor, did not apply for the job. Today, the staff was told that she's accepted an assignment editor's job at USA Today.

Richmond's loss = USA Today's gain. They're getting a terrific newspaper person and terrific person. It's a good deal for her. I am among many who will miss her terribly. Third hire from Richmond to USA Today, following Skip Wood and Nate Ryan.

Heather's definitely good people. I will always be endebtted to her for guiding me to a Richmond-area event when I was lost a few years ago.
