For what it's worth, calls to sports are being routed to someone named Greg; at least that was the case Tuesday. I had to call Eugene to see what photos they shot from US Track and Field championships.

A new name has entered the race. To be determined whether they get the OK to hire from outside.

OK to hire from outside denied. Sounds like an internal will move up, but sports will stay a person down.
    Hardly a surprise.

The Bakers, who own the paper, did a significant part of the on-site interviewing of three candidates who applied by the May 25 deadline. Two of those were from outside. Are you saying they brought those people in for interviews without having permission to hire from outside? And, permission from whom? They own the paper.

Ron Bellamy's farewell column...(still not sure who the paper named as SE, though I'm assuming it was an in-house candidate)

Nice to see someone stay in a place for that many years and be able to reap the rewards of retirement at the end. Enjoy Ron

It was indeed in-house. I believe it was their features/entertainment editor.
And congrats to Ron. I only met him a couple of times, but he was a real nice guy.

Mark Johnson, who has worked at The Register-Guard for the past two decades in a variety of editing assignments, has been named the newspaper’s sports editor.

“We’re very lucky to have an experienced and dedicated journalist such as Mark Johnson to carry on a long tradition in excellent sports coverage at The Register-Guard,” said managing editor David Baker. “Mark’s passion for sports has never wavered as he’s filled several key roles in our newsroom, so it’s gratifying to see him get this opportunity.

“He has all the tools — writing, copy editing, extensive experience in management, features and hard news — to be an outstanding sports editor.”

The 51-year-old Johnson replaces Ron Bellamy, who is retiring today after 36 years at The Register-Guard, including the past nine in charge of the sports department.

“The sports department at The Register-Guard is held in high regard because of the standards set by Ron Bellamy and his staff,” Johnson said. “I feel extremely fortunate to join that group.”

A 1982 graduate of the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism, Johnson was hired by the newspaper in 1990 as a copy editor. He was the assistant sports editor from 1993 to 2000 under sports editor John Conrad.

After then serving as an assistant city editor for two years, Johnson has been the newspaper’s features editor for the past 10 years.

Johnson also worked as Sunday editor for The Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif., and sports editor for The Daily Astorian in Astoria before being hired by The Register-Guard.
