    We had a co-worker who spent time at the Guam paper. She was excellent, the first woman on our sports staff. Her first day, the boss wanted to have a brief staff meeting. She asked if there was a safe place she could stash her purse. The boss said, "We've never had that question come up before."

    Cannot speak for Guam in particular, but I do know that elsewhere in Southeast Asia, we were instructed to make sure that valuables were secured ... to the point of not putting down your luggage at the airport.

    Imagine my shock when we came back stateside, en route back home hanging out with a family friend who didn't worry about any of that because it was not an issue.
