If you're going to DC (not Baltimore) and points south, faster by far to get off at the 301 South exit and head for Annapolis. Not much of a detour, really.
I hope that states are going to allow licensed betting shops and not make you go to racetracks to get a bet down. I assume that everything will be web-based eventually and i wonder if there will be states which will band together to allow betting across state lines.
Imagine holding a ticket for the Cavs, only to find this out about LeBron's injuries after the series.
Got an interesting survey today from the Daily Racing Form. Based on it, I think they might be considering morphing into the Daily Wagering Form.
Mississippi approved sports wagering today. There go another bajillion potential Alabama tax dollars. The busiest lottery stations in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee are all just across the Alabama state line.
There are a couple of dog tracks and a couple of Indian Casinos, which have "electronic bingo" machines - which are basically slot machines by another name, although the process by which they determine winners is in theory based on bingo. The state gets no money from the Indian casinos. State legislators get lots of donations from casinos in Mississippi for keeping it that way, though. Lord only how big the handle on illegal college football betting is here. It's huge. Putting in sports books here would mint money. If it does happen, the odds are that we'll be around #49 in the nation, as usual. It's the "Buckle of the Bible Belt" and all that rot, which brings out the odd political bedfellows. It used to be the Baptists and the Bootleggers keeping a county dry. This is basically the same thing. The current Republican Guvnah is probably going to continue to stand against the lottery (because it's sinful, immoral, anti-church, and the poors will piss away all their butter and egg money on it), and the Democratic nominee is on record as being for it as it would bring in a lot of (desperately needed, as the lege is in Grover Norquist's pocket) money without raising taxes. There are plenty of Bible thumpers in Georgia and Mississippi too, of course, but they are pragmatic enough to let their people have a lottery or casinos, and damn happy to take money from legions of Alabamans otherwise deprived. Tour buses run regular day trips from nursing homes to casinos in podunk towns in Mississippi so Granny can play the nickel slots. Dumb as shit.
I didn't know Alabama had any Native Americans. I thought they all got frog-marched to Oklahoma in the 1830s.
Most of the ones who had not already been killed were. The Poarch Creek are the biggest group, but there are several smaller tribes who also get a piece of the pie. They are not terribly numerous.
On I-95 there are a lot of those roadside highway plazas that have gas, a convenience store and a couple fast food restaurants. How long will it be before they add a sports book?
