    Overheard in a Minnesota Target as my ears perked up hearing a 30-year-old-ish guy talk to a younger dude about something involving Sports Illustrated. I began eavesdropping because I thought, hey, maybe someone's going to reminisce about a vintage Reilly column or talk about Dan Jenkins' groundbreaking college football coverage or recall his late father crying over a Gary Smith feature:

    "No, I'm serious. Matt says that before readily available porn, that if you didn't have a Playboy you'd have to jerk off using the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Fucking imagine."

    No joke, this is exactly what my dad said when I told him this tale!

    Speaking of the old man, was at their place and he's been an SI subscriber since the early '70s and every copy is still in the basement. He had a couple of new issues--"They just started showing up again, I don't know"--and I have to say I REALLY liked them. Fantastic stories and pics and layout and it was just nice sitting on the couch and settling in with a good print mag again.

    National Geographic had 1.8 million (yes, million) paid subscribers at the end of 2022. And that did not include the one-off special editions. I don't think its downfall is a commentary on the state of the media business. I think it is a commentary on Disney being a unconscionable steward.

    When I was a kid, I would visit my Grandma's house and she had a little library room that had several shelves of National Geographics, with their excellent maps on the walls. I could sit there for hours thumbing through random issues and I thought the endless yellow-spined covers looked so great. So after college, I started picking up old NGs at flea markets and such -- a lot of folks were willing to give them away for next to nothing if not free. Soon I had my own shelves of yellow-spined covers.

    But after a couple cross-state moves I understood why people are happy to give away boxes and boxes of old mags for free. I don't have those National Geographics anymore.

    My company just acquired a legacy print publisher (nearly 100 years old) and our CEO is adamant that younger readers are into print as an immersive experience.

    I still think print can work as a weekly product, precisely because it can be an alternative to the constant barrage of online content and social media. But the weekly product has to be quality and ultra focused on whatever group of readers you’re trying to reach.
