    Sir,

I know the Red Smith biography, the Red Smith collections but I don't know a RS autobio. By the way Sat is the 105th anniversary of his birth, 113th of William Faulkner's, Michael Douglas's 66th b-day, KZ Jones's 41st, Will Smith's and Scottie Pippen's 45th, Anson Williams's 61st (!), and my 54th.

I'd love to work on something like that. I have absolutely no qualifications, but I'd love to help.

No textbook. Just take field trips every day to the sliced departments and say "Is this what you want your life to be like?"

Just teach them to file for unemployment.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. As far as the snark, I don't recall saying the class would be limited to teaching students how to write for newspapers, but thanks for the concern. One of the best speakers last semester was a newspaper reporter who had transformed her recreational interest into a one-woman beat in which she wrote print stories, web stories and blogs, took pictures and shot video.

Don't know if you're still looking, but "The Essentials of Sports Reporting and Writing" by Scott Reinardy and Wayne Wanta is a decent textbook.
