I have to be in the right mood to put up with Cowherd. His ego seems more out of control than ever, though maybe it's just because I haven't listened since the first day of his show. Was going through Kornheiser withdrawal ... I still miss that show in the mornings.
I've listened to Rome regularly for 10 years. I like it not only because he's a great interviewer but because the show is a culture of its own.
This guy isn't a talk show host, but Tommy Tighe from all the Westwood One coverage is beyond annoying with a pun for EVERY God damn thing. EVERYTHING. Just give it a rest once in a while, please.
On a local level, I listen to mostly Chicago sports radio. Can't stand 1000 outside Mac, Jurko and Harry ... on the Score, I'll always listen to Mike Murphy and Sports Central on WGN is decent. That's not an all-sports station, of course, but it's a nice listen if I've been away from sports for a day or two because it caters to non-sports fans.

Unbelievably annoying voice. Can't stand him, and his voice only makes it worse

Bob Kemp does afternoons in Phoenix/Tempe.

Never liked Rome, but agree with you on his interview skills. Actually, you and I agree on just about everything from your post. I ALMOST feel like a Jeopardy champion!

Indeed. Listening to him talk about orange slices is about as good as listening to Yakov Smirnov screeching "What a country!."
Maybe Rome should take his anti-soccer act to Branson.

I used to love Todd Wright, but by the end of his ESPN Radio run, I was ready to say goodbye to him. Too...smarmy or condescending or something. Can't think of the the word right now.

That said, if I realized how bad Jason Smith would end up being, I would have started a letter-writing campaign to ESPN to keep Wright

  7. agreed. Jason Smith is god-awful.

Actually, Tommy Tighe is so bad he's good. The key is that his puns are delivered not with Berman's borchtbelt manner, but in a staccato reminesent of Ed Murrow during the Blitz in London. I feel like I've gone back 50, no make that 60 years in time, when I listen to him.
While somewhat off-topic, I enjoy hearing radio stringers from throughout the country that provide updates to ESPN, some are very good experienced pros, and others TRY WAY TO HARD as if a 30-second update from a Mississippi-North Carolina State football game will suddenly punch their ticket to Bristol.

Boomer was fine. Tough position to take over for a legend.
He had good rap going with Chris Collinsworth and Howie Long segment was pretty funny.

They pretty much hit on every Matt Millen story known to mankind so it will be tough to sustain week in and week out.

  10. Boomer is every midtown blowhard you ever crossed the street to avoid.
That said, Mike and the Dog in the AM was brutal.

I heard a bit of Esiason, both yesterday and today. I don't think he can last. He's sparring with all of these guys, but has very thin skin. The show is also far too story centered to persist without major transformation. The biggest problem is that while he is an insightful analyst for a football game (though there too, he is overmatched in the verbal sparring with Marv, but keeps starting up, like a 7 year old trying to start a fight with his high school brother), he just doesn't have much to offer once the subject veers away from nuts & bolts football. After today, I'd give a tryout to Collinsworth, who sounds like he'd be great.

I have to give him credit though, for the line of the day yesterday when he introduced Peter King as the writer of MMQB, where you can find everything you want to know about Peter King, and even some football. He said it completely deadpan, and no one commented on it, straight into the interview (he repeated the Quinn answer verbatim to Mike & Mike about 3 minutes later).
