I give the writer credit for having the guts to write about this in a large-circulation newspaper. If the writer is happy, good for the writer.

For the record he didn't say he was having surgery to change his sex. You heading is factually wrong.
"He did not say whether he was having surgery or why he's changing his last name."

So let me get this straight -- we now have intersexual, transexual, transgendered crossdressers who readily admit they've ruined their families because they have no idea who or what they are coming in here to tell their tales and convince those of us who are comfortable in who we are that they are more courageous than us.

Brilliant, when did these threads become the Jerry Springer show?

Here's a statement from Randy Harvey:

“Mike Penner has been an exemplary contributor to the Los
Angeles Times sports pages for over two decades and today’s column
is no exception,” Randy Harvey, the newspaper’s sports editor,
said in a statement. “The decision to go public cannot have been
an easy one and, while we do not make a habit of commenting on the
personal and private lives of our journalists, we do look forward
to continuing our relationship into the future.”

One thing that's 100 percent clear is that all the people who are posting on this thread and saying they are transsexual or some form are being open, rational and adult about it.

So when is Doc going to come out to the Board?

I was concerned about this thread last night. I'm ecstatic to see that some wonderful people have shown up to help us understand what it means to be a transsexual.

There're still some idiotic trolls, but the thread has turned out much better than I thought it would.

Hey, all the props in the world to her for coming out about it, especially on such a large stage. My only question (in all seriousness) is why isn't her changing the name to Michelle? It might be a little easier to remember and easier to cover up when you accidently call her Mike. I hope everything works out and there aren't any complications with this surgery, which I can imagine is complicated enough, as is.

Intersexed, transsexual, and crossdressers -- all of whom, to some extent, are considered transgendered.

I know precisely what I am.

I haven't ruined my family, either -- my wife is aware and understands entirely -- she just wants a male role model for my son.

I didn't see where anyone claimed they were more courageous than anyone else.

The reactions above are what the majority of TS people experience in daily life, and so I thank the poster for providing that example. I have had full big gulps hurled at me from speeding cars while walking along the street, had my life threatened, and been beaten for Being TS, and count myself lucky to still be alive.

The most common phrase I've heard used to get my atteniton is "hey, freak!". Fortunately, it usually doesn't work.

incidentally, the surgery is called vaginoplasty, and is performed on women with issues as well as MTF. The penis is not actually cut off, but is instead used to create the vagina, labia, and clitoris. So while there's certainly a great deal of humor in the "cut off" comments, they aren't actually correct -- its still there.

And yes, it is, in the end, extremely difficult to tell. It requires, for the most part, either the eye of someone expereinced in seeing the surgeries, an internal exmaination, or x-rays. And it works *very* well.

    What surgery?
Apparently, some people have reading comprehension problems.

Belonged in Sports all the way, in my opinion. It's a Sports story. It's about, as the story succinctly says, "A transexual sportswriter" .... with longtime readers of his sports stories, with many many subjects of his stories in sports, with a boss and colleagues in the business, with colleagues in the biz, with soccer buddies, etc etc .... and Sports is a male hetero-dominated world. this runs 100 percent against that grain.

All of these things, in my mind, make it a a Sports story.

Dysonnance -- All of those words you use are a cutesy, clean -- and I'm sure in your mind hopefully some day state-recognized -- way of saying freak.

And I mean no disrespect in saying that, I just think it is becoming absurd that those of us who aren't willing to buy a lot of this nonsense as anything more than finding new and clever ways to sanction the lifestyle of every wierdo who comes down the block, like male lesbians, are automatically classified as bigots.

Cross dressing is part of a freak show, it isn't another category of minority.
