To treat the wife as an unfortunate byproduct, in this case, speaks volumes.

    I must agree with that.

Some of the postings by ZoeB deal with the wife issue. These are not idiotic questions. Penner/Daniels has made it public. There are a lot of people who know them both. I was on the same beat with Lisa when she first came to L.A. She is one of the world's nicest people. Penner/Daniels, too. If there are concerns in this thread for Penner/Daniels' welfare and happiness, there are the same concerns for Lisa.

    sobay,

I have no issue with the LA Times putting the story in its sports section. I have no issue with Penner's decision. If it is what makes him happy, then all power to him. As painful as such a decision can be for others, something of such magnitude must be done with your own best interests in mind.

However, I disagree with you about not involving his wife in the story. Journalists would not extend the same courtesy to non-journalists. If we were covering a similar decision by, say, a married athlete, you can bet we would all be asking for the wife's reaction -- if not chasing her down, directly.

Well said. But we have a unique interest in his wife, since she's a colleague, someone we know, or know of. If he had been married to someone else, it might not be as much of an issue around here.

Their marriage certainly wasn't known to all the Times' readers...mentioning it would have destroyed any hope of her maintaining a shred of privacy. Tough call, but I can see why they went this route.

As to Elliotte's point....someone else will report the story, and tell all the details. I'm not convinced Penner needed to do it himself in that column.

Just checked the Times' Web site again. From 10:40 a.m. until the moderators locked the thread at 6:05 p.m. PDT, there were about 800 reader comments.

The ones which were there were probably 80% positive. The moderator did, however, say that 10% of the posts were immediately removed "due to profanity and/or over-the-top offensiveness."

Shot, here's the hard thing. Let's say for example Mike went to cover preps, do you think a parent, knowing what they know about this situation, will allow him to interview their kid in private? I just see this being a bad situation going worse.

Is Christine a prep writer now?

Lots of prep writers I know don't interview kids in private anyway, so it's not really a bad situation going worse at all, is it?

My niece has a high school math teacher who went the distance...female to male with surgery. One year she was female, the next fall he was male. The school had no grounds to fire him, he was tenured. There was some basic trembling among the parents, and then it was back to school as usual. The kids make a couple of jokes, get a good look, and then it's over. Life goes on.

For all the money in the world, I would not have guessed at this time last night that we would have had three TSes contributing to this board. That's why I love this place.

Oh, that and laughing at the constant douchethuggery of some of the regulars.

Something about the term "douchethuggery" in this thread ...

That this place is known enough to turn up three TSes (is that correct?) to contribute to our understanding of what they go throught on a day-to-day basis amazes me, and it's why I love this place.
