Whether or not he is a journalist has nothing to do with it. Indiansnetwork has simply proven himself to be a jackass.

Okay, I have read almost all 18 pages of this and, I have to admit, my head is spinning. Now, since I can't offer anything brilliant, I'm going to wash my hands of it. I' m an educated man but most of this is over my head. As I posted earlier, I do believe Penner's original column belonged in sports because that is where he always appeared. I don't believe a second story was necessary but, again, I don't know enough to comment on that.

There has been some enlightening discussion here, and there has been some asinine comments. I would assume you know who you are. I'm over and out at this point and I would suggest that the rest of you show some common sense and common decency in future commentary. I wish Christine the best.

    Thank you and good night.

Second story? That's what I get for skipping 10 pages.

I've learned a lot from this post and am impressed with the dialogue. I may have missed it - but I am curious why transgendered people change both of their names post-op and how they come up with their new names. Can anybody help me out?

In the Follow up, Christine pulled her new last name from her old middle name.

Almost universally, a new first name is chosen. In some locations, that new first name is legally required to be "unmistakeably feminine". (yes, really -- Flordia is one of them, and I believe that California used to be).

THe rest changes according tothe nature if the individual person -- I mean, how often do you get to choose your own name?

My name comes from what I've been called all my life anyway, and I'm considered a notable exception to the general rule. Toni is short for Antonia, in this case. I discarded my old first and last names becuase they have a set of baggage with them that I don't wish to deal with -- they are reminders of what I suffered through.

In most cases though, I'd have to honestly say that its somewhat similar to that.

This is a new life, and with it, you take a new name. When there's that much pain, you make a clean break.

Thanks Dyssonance - Anyone interested in more info on the topic - I saw 20/20 is doing a piece on transgender kids tonight (FRIDAY)

Off topic I know - but all you SoCal folks, if a car chase takes place in L.A. outside one of the tv "sweeps" months - does it make a sound?

Amusing stuff, but you're too late, Mizzou.

The part of "The Ass" in this thread was already taken by zagosdunce.

    ;D

Nineteen pages later, you havent' convinced me Lisa's situation doesn't need to be addressed. I'd still like to see something official from Lisa, by a real source. Yesterday, I heard that they were getting a divorce, but had no way to confirm, so I didn't offer it here. I still have no way to confirm. Sports by Brooks didn't confirm it either, didn't source it, but he wrote it ... it's the difference between journalists and blog-wannabes.

I'm personally not interested in a piece of information about Lisa, or about their marriage. A divorce or non-divorce is just a fact, a bit of info.

I'm more interested in first-person accounts of what it's like from her perspective, and from Mike/Christine's perspective of what it was like to tell Mike/Christine's family, the people who raised Mike Penner and who he grew up with. Because of Mike/Christine's standing as a very good journalist, and Lisa's standing as same, I hope some great insight into what transitioning is like for all concerned might be available to the masses. For educational purposes, and because as those of us who have followed Alica Parlette's story can attest, a detailed first-person account of a life-changing experience can be quite fascinating.
