God, I hate when that happens. I thought it was just me. ;)

Give them time. Christine won't be sweating the small stuff - as long as people make an effort to use the right pronouns, that's all that can be reasonably asked for at this stage. I've found those who make the mistake take it far more seriously than I do.

Zoe and dyson and others, on the other hand, have managed to do this without talking down to people.

    Excellent post. POTY Nominee
I agree they messed this one up big time. While I may not agree or understand what he/she is going through it would have been nice to see how his family is taking this situation. Seems like a self servering article with the omission of his/her family. Maybe they could print a follow up story in a few months. I am sure he/she is depressed and wouldn't want to have a follow up but it would be nice to see how the family deals with these complex and controversial issues.

Using the correct pronouns can be important a number of people -- imagine how you'd react if you were called the wrong gender, not that male jocks have a problem being referred to as "girls." ;) But as Zoe said, intent counts for a lot. It's one thing when someone is trying to make an effort and slips, it's another when one deliberately misuses pronouns as an insult. Not really that different from other words that can be misused innocently or with malice.

Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen/women/whatever rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only pre-op aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher/Muffy, Miller/Janet, Crowley/Elaine and Layden/Margaret.

Space, it is impossible to visualize you doing this procedure. But would you hit it?

Well I guess I am holier than thou?

I apologize for trying to enlighten those unsure of what is going on. All I was trying to do was express my happiness for her and try and straighten out certain people's views that she has only been a woman for "49 hours." That is not the case.

But I do apologize if I came across as preaching or lecturing.

  11. I appreciate Alma's point about tone, but the writer's caught in a conundrum here. He is relieved -- even happy - to have come to this decision. That's got to come out somewhere in the prose. That it came out more jocularly than it might, that may be because the writer's not wholly up to his topic. There's no rule that we have to write better about ourselves than we do anyone else.
