You'd be surprised. As was said in TransAmerica, We walk among you. Surgical records show 1 in 2500 women in the USA had genital reconstruction. You may well know some of them. You might even know one of the 1 in 10,000 guys born with a female body, but who overcame that handicap and won the masculinity that was their birthright.

It's hard for me to comprehend someone wanting to change their sex.
Got nothing against the writer here of note.
Best of luck to everyone and anyone trying to find happiness in life.
But, damn - that's just hard for me to fathom.

I wanted to change my sex for ages. I did my best to do so, to be a guy. After all, I had a male body, I figured I had to be male.
Eventually though, you realise there's no point trying to be what you can't be.

To understand, imagine if you had been one of the 1 in 10,000 men who are born with a girl-shaped body.Imagine that when other boys are playing baseball, you're expected to play with dolls. Now maybe you think you'd get used to it in time, and psychologically, maybe you would. But physiologically, your male-pattern brain works less and less well on a female hormone mix. So eventually, you have to tell your husband (!!!???) that his partner is really his best buddy, and a guy like him. You start taking testosterone, and reclaiming your manhood.

You don't change your sex : you reclaim it, as Christine is doing. As I am.

Look at my icon. According to my birth certificate, that is a picture of a 49 year old male. Sorry, I couldn't pass as a guy now if I tried.

Zoe, you have to understand that some of us aren't going to get it. To be honest, much as I consider myself to be very open-minded, I don't get it. It's nothing lacking in your explanation or those of others on here. It's just so far from some people's way of thinking and experience that it is hard to understand.

And that's ok. I don't underderstand lots of people, including half the population (the female half). S'okay. I get along with women fine. Even married one (the unfortunate, patient woman that she is).

The best some of us can do is wish you well in finding your happiness and accept that you are doing what makes sense for you. Make sense?

I find it impossible to blame you for not understanding either.
I'm a straight-laced, conservative, somewhat prudish and definitely sexually repressed woman. I was born in the 50's, in a middle-class English family. My sister was literally thrown out on the streets when she became pregnant.
I'm not a Christian, but apart from that, I'm more "square" than most of middle America, not approving of and not engaging in pre-marital sex.
Then I have to deal with something as embarrassing as being Transsexual. Of course I don't blame you for not understanding, I wish I didn't have to deal with it.
Don't worry. Despite being a "spy in the enemy camp" for 47 years, I will never, ever understand Men. Not Gay ones, not Straight ones either. Certainly not ones who dress in womens clothing for fun.
That's more than I have a right to expect - so thanks. Understanding is good, but love (as in "love thy neighbour") is better.

All the very best, and my thanks, Zoe
