Read the job description. You HAVE TO live in Blacksburg!!!

The Richmond Times-Dispatch seeks a dogged reporter, entertaining writer and social media expert to cover Virginia Tech athletics for the newspaper and various digital products. The position requires living in Blacksburg, Va., and communicating daily with the Times-Dispatch sports editor. The reporter primarily will cover Virginia Tech football and men's basketball, but is expected to cover all sports through notes packages, blogging and occasional features and game stories. This reporter will be expected to blog, include multimedia with blog postings, and use social media on a regular basis. We are looking for a beat writer with at least five years of experience covering a college football or college basketball beat in a highly competitive atmosphere. Submit your resume, cover letter, clips and include examples of multimedia and social networking at mediageneral.com. Links are acceptable, but must be provided with your clips while submitting the application.

Excellent point, snoopy. That seems to have escaped some people.

Well, I suspect they may let you slide if you choose to live 10 min. away in Christiansburg. I think the point is this is a VT-based job, not a Richmond-based job. I lived 20 min. OUTSIDE Richmond when I worked there, not in RICHMOND. But, yeah, your overall point is the same.

Haven't been in touch with anyone recently to see where this stands. As someone noted above, they're not hurting for excellent candidates. Steve has a tough call but will end up with a quality person. One of the top candidates, I know, took a similar job elsewhere - I don't know where he stood on Richmond's pecking order. The cupboard is not bare.

I'm hearing a hire has been made. A damn good one, too, if true.

Mike Barber, who covered JMU for Harrisonburg, tweeted he got the job.

Indeed. Again, great hire. He's been at the DNR for a decade. Bout time he got a chance to do bigger and better things.

Road trips for the VT media just got a massive upgrade.

Good for Mike. Known him for a while, he does quality work. He helped us out at FanHouse on a freelance basis, too. And he only has to move 120 miles down I-81.

Or....he could commute from Harrisonburg and move 0 miles while still being able to pummel a case of beer in his garage. Of course, he'd have to build a garage, and I'm not sure his HOA would approve.
