Yes. Eric Kolenich - a good, hard-working young man (the old me would have said kid) - went from part-time to full-time when Arthur Utley retired. Some of their current part-timers have one of the prep sports to handle, which lightens his load. But, yes, it is a very big load. I'm sure they'd LOVE a second full-timer on preps and it is probably a bigger priority right now than the Skins (they can use our stuff) and NASCAR (as noted, the wires do a very good job and covering racing is a massive expense).

But it is not priority in my mind over their very own VT writer.

Nascar is only a local sport year-round in Charlotte and Daytona. The traveling circus aspect of the sport has killed local beat writers nationwide. Same thing for golf writers.

    Moddy:

Absolutely agree. Knowing they have one prep person, I'd say this would be my priority if I were Strosky or the random higher-up who likes to pretend they know anything about the newsroom:

    1. VT
    2. Second preps
    3. Third preps
    4. Desk
    5. Pizza party
    6. Open bar for the universal desk
    7. NASCAR writer

I'd think open bar would be higher and "fund revival of Louisiana Flair" would be top two.

I was thinking in the "it still needs to be generally newspaper related. But yes, my druthers would have Louisiana Flair like No. 1A.

Here's hoping that priority defeats the almighty dollar.

I'm thinking diversify the portfolio to fund the department, as well as for morale.

    Louisiana Flair closed?
    I do miss that gumbo.

It did. I meant to call Nate before the last day. When I was there for the race in the spring, I stopped in to get lunch. I told him he needed to come down to Atlanta. Too bad I didn't get in touch with him again before they closed.

With the push toward "synergy" among papers in the chain, and of course the money issues, all I'm saying is why not have a company wide VT writer and one for UVa? (Taking C'ville out of the equation because well, obviously ...). Agreed on the FT prep guy. Of course, it's easy for me since I don't sit the SE chair in Richmond to have these feelings. MG has UVa writers, they already have a VT writer ... what's missing? I'm sure the smaller papers communicate among themselves when prep playoffs hit to get stuff covered. I'm sure the smaller papers with NASCAR tracks provide each other with localized content when asked and needed. That's all I'm saying.
But, again, I'm not sitting in the Richmond SE desk. If I were, I'm sure I'd feel a lot different than I do now.
And best of luck to all who apply. You'll get a great boss.

I will disagree with that one.

The 50 or so blue collar boys I know loved Sr, like a father, but since his death, they have no one to root for. When old time NASCAR guys don't have a driver to pull for, I think, it really hurts the sport.
