One question I'm getting via e-mail is the time frame of our hiring process.

I plan to accept applications for about two weeks, then begin to conduct phone interviews. Thanks to all who have applied already. Lots of good applicants already.

  2. There is no doubt in my mind that Scott will turn this paper around. Before being the sports editor of a paper in Kentucky, I previously served three years as a sports editor at a paper about a half hour or so from Greenwood so I am familiar with the paper. I know what it's been, and I know what Scott can do. He'll get it done.

  4. Congrats on the new job, Scott.

You might also want to point out that the Clemson campus is about 65 miles away ... not a bad selling point for recent grads ... and Greenville has a nice nightlife.

Should be a great spot for someone starting out. Lots of good high schools in that region to cover.

    greenville....greenwood....

  6. Yeah, no kidding. Greenville is hovering between 90,000 and 100,000 and Greenwood is 16,000. "People make that mistake all the time" ... not if you know what you're talking about, Boots.

Did his appraisal of the newspaper change or just the town? ::)

I've spent a little time in Greenville since my best friend lives up there, and you're right, it's got pretty good nightlife. And I may be kind enough to give the new hire a weekend off here and there, so they can trek up to the 'Ville. Greenwood's nightlife, from what I've heard, isn't "terrible." I'd give a first-hand account, but I haven't been able to venture out yet.

Lots of good applicants so far. I'll start doing phone interviews a week from Monday, more than likely.

Another good, up-front description of a gig at a smaller place. This site, for all its flaws, has had quite a few of those recently.

Congratulations on the new gig, Scott.

He's a good dude who is going to do good things for the Greenwood sports section.

I can second Scott's assessment of The Index-Journal gig. It's a great place to start in a newly forward-thinking environment. Strong leadership, progressive ideas, new design coming. It wouldn't surprise me if The Index-Journal's sports section quickly rises to the top of the small daily division in the Palmetto State. If you're looking for good clips, this is a strong starting point. Drop Scott a line.

With a goal like that, you're bound to succeed.

Nice catch. BEST small daily sports section in the state, region and country.
