I've always felt more comfortable with the two word format

AP says two words. They even say it's an exception to the dictionary.

But, and I had never thought of it, those who made the case it's not sportseditor or sportsreporter or whatever convinced me anyway.

    Two words...

Businesswriter? Featureswriter? No. So, two words.

The fact that "business writer" is two words is hardly a lock for "sports writer" as two. Quarterback and running back? Same essential description, two different forms.

I await a 9,000-word essay on this topic at Grantland.

They're not really the same essential descriptions, though. Quarterback, halfback, fullback, tailback, cornerback -- all of these correlate to parts of the field (or did back in the day), whereas running back is an umbrella term, covering three of the above positions. The writing positions are all the same descriptions: News writers write about news, sports writers write about sports, etc. There's no reason one should be different.
