Sportswriters funnier on Twitter?

Not everyone should use twitter. But beat writers for college and pro teams absolutely should. And if you're in an area where HS football is huge, I'd imagine updates from those games would be of interest too.

Where do the policies by publications restricting social networking use fit into all this? (For instance, the idea at some places that if you're going to use Twitter you'd better use the newspaper's feed instead of your personal one?)

My old shop collected everyone's Twitter handles for a directory. But after six months and some layoffs, many of the most popular reporters left, taking their Twitter accounts with them. Now, I noticed that all the new accounts in the directory have the paper's name. Clearly, this is to keep followers even as reporters come and go.

I completely agree. Then again, I'm one of the young ones.

I've tried to avoid it. Really, I have. But so many players I cover are on there, you'd be a fool to at least not follow them. Especially during free agency, I feel like if I'm not at least paying attention to Twitter, I'm not doing my job.

I have yet to post anything there, though.

Speaking of funny on Twitter Bill Simmons on Twitter this AM: Oct 2009: the month I started getting taunting emails from Yankee fans again. Apparently their email was broken since 2003

If you don't use it, you're missing out. Use it as a personal invitation to read your latest column. It helps build a connection between you and your readers that goes beyond the words in your column.

I think you're missing the boat. The point Ralph makes about how Twitter can aggregate news. It's also true that it can send you a lot of links to pieces you might not see otherwise, or that would take you time to search for. I've found it's really a time-saving device. I don't feel compelled to tweet more than I see fit, and most of what I do send out there is just links to my columns and stories.

Fair enough. I really wasn't aware of Twitter's full power as an aggregate news service. I think of it first from my work perspective, and as a freelance writer I wouldn't have the same urgent need for it as, say, a beat writer. I could link to my stories, but they're not consistent in terms of publishing and I'd feel stupid to have weeks pass between links.
