    Sirs, Madames,

I have no idea who wins. Final Four, I'm hoping you do some sort of flashback pieces--old black-and-white stuff from the early days of Starch Madness--on Weetabix, Rice Chex and the sugar-shaving scandal.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch will be the champion. No one can beat those bakers. No one.

    FOTF,

Great idea, but neither Cereal Correspondent nor I are that old. Wheetabix?

    Respectfully,

Re: Starch Madness -- SWEET SIXTEEN, page 5

    Ms Cadet,

A shameful episode in tournament history -- mobsters influencing cereal-makers to reduce the usual sugar quotient in breakfast staples, throwing Starch Madness contests (hard to believe but back in those days Starch Madness was just a 16-brand tournament). The integrity of cereal was much damaged by the scandal -- those of us who were around see it as a tipping point. After the sugar-shaving many people started to pass up cereal in the morning and breakfast altogether, opting for a cup of coffee alone on their way out of the door. In fact, Weetabix was given the cereal death penalty and Rice Chex's program was in limbo for years, never really recovering. Supermarkets with disgraced brands in stock bargain-binned them or gave them away to charities. Senate hearings into the sugar-shaving scandal prompted legislation regulating cereal advertising on television -- the powerful wheat, oats and corn lobbies exercised their clout in derailing a complete ban.

The tourney was lost when Cocoa Pebbles and Smart Start didn't advance.

    Cereal Fans, we've got overtime!

Because it's unfair to let the tournament director cast the deciding vote, let's go out to Battle Creek for the duel between Rice Krispies and Apple Jacks.

Who will it be, No. 3 Rice Krispies or No. 7 Apple Jacks?

Voting is open for two more hours, until 3:30 a.m. EST.
