    Not nearly as reasonable as the amount of doubt in the case of California vs. O.J. Simpson....

    Again, the research is squirrelly (i.e., the results are terribly mixed), but a good chunk of that literature suggests that life without parole doesn't have as strong an effect as does an on-the-books-and-applied death penalty. But I certainly see what you're getting at. At some point, the expected-number-of-innocents-killed curves would have to intersect, wouldn't they?
