I agree with both of these statements. This is a different "conflict" from anything we have ever seen. But those in charge are not trustworthy as far as approaching this situation in a well-reasoned, intelligent way.

I know Farenheit 9-11 got picked apart for a lot of things, but I have yet to hear anyone tell me that the Fresno peace group that was being monitored was not quite as harmless as Michael Moore led us to believe. Seriously, why did those people need to be monitored?
And why did that gym rat who called George Bush an asshole deserve to get a visit from the feds?
And if that last line means you're OK with torture, I disagree. We're supposed to be the good guys. We have an obligation to act accordingly.

  3. I'm sure if someone called Clinton (or any other president) an a-hole, they'd get a visit from the Feds, too.

They've got to check on everything. Kind of like talking about hijacking at an airport.

Talking or joking about killing the president, yes. Insulting him, I don't think so.

  5. Do we know what precedent is for that? I don't, I'm just asking.

According to historians, when Vlad Tepes (Dracula) wanted to change the direction of his country, he invited all the ruling class (the boyars, a notoriously corrupt group of nobles) to one of his castles for a feast. After they ate, he locked them in the main square and killed them, most of them getting impaled at the stake...

Why not just get rid of the whole den of vipers, including the head snake himself. I think politics is just like wrestling: once all the cameras are off, the Republicans & Democrats head back into their offices together, break open a 50-year-old scotch and laugh at all the marks who actually think one side or the other will solve the country's problems. All while lighting cigars with hundred-dollar bils and propping their feet up on the backs of illegal immigrants. God bless America, huh?

I don't either. But the threatening a president's life (even if joking) vs. calling him a name seems like a pretty clear line to me.

  8. Among other things, PR, the USA Patriot Act prevents us from knowing this stuff.

  9. Find me an item wherein that happened. Jesse Helms told Clinton to wear body armor when he came to NC. Nothing happened to him.
And I do not believe that a criminal gang from the mountains of Pakistan is a bigger existential threat to this country than the thousands of Russian ICBM's that were/are pointed at me for 50 years. The existential threat is what we do to ourselves because we're too scared to live up to the best of what this country is supposed to be about.
And Patrick Henry was at greater risk from the British than we ever will be from the terrorists.

That Joe Lieberman quote could be the worst ever.

And Democrats who changed their vote because of Bush's threat of holding Congress into its precious summer recess should be deeply ashamed. Way to sell out your rights so you can have a month off.

As one bumper sticker I read recently said "That's OK. I wasn't using my civil rights anyway."
