    Which begs the question, if 30,000 die from the flu every year in this country, why aren't we at Level 5 all the time?

    My understanding of these things is that the reason they raise the alert on these isn't that hey are dangerous now, but that the virus is one good mutation away from being uberdangerous.

    Actually the CDC admits that the 30,000+ per year stat pertains to flu "associated" deaths, not flu deaths. It's really pnumonia that doest the vast majority of the killing.
