No, I haven't. 105 miles in one day is my top right now. But that ride was easy, too, and I felt I could go for another few hours without breaking down.

And, yes, I agree that a ton of training will be needed. I'm inclined at this stage to race with a relay team, do the first two legs then catch a car to the finish where I can interview winners and wait for my partners to finish.

I've been hitting some short races so far, but I'll need to do a few centuries during the summer. That's easy enough to do since there seems to be a century every other week here with several hundred riders participating. I'm actually in my kit right now waiting for Uma to come home so I can go log another 30-40 miles before sunset.

I did an organized ride once and took pictures of the scenery with a disposable while riding. Not that I recommend such multitasking, however.

For some reason today I received an entry form for a 5k in the mail. Not sure how I got on the mailing list (I did the Kona Marathon two years ago, but haven't run a local road race in over a quarter century), but all of a sudden, I'd like to do it.
Now if I could only get the pain in my right knee to go away...

    Lots of ibuprofin. Lots.

and, on a side note, registration for the 1,000 cyclist LOTOJA filled up only 48 hours after it opened. so, unless I can get a comp spot, I won't be riding -- which my wife will appreciate.

I am a testament to the wonders of massive doses of Naprosen (Aleve). It's hard on the stomach at first, but you get used to it. I pop some when I wake up, and by the time I am running an hour later, my tissue-paper leg bones are oblivious to the pain and damage I am doing to them. I also slather copious amounts of mineral ice onto my lower legs and ankles before running. It's this blue gel. Think Ben Gay, but not quite as smelly. It makes me feel old--have the same thought about being an old fart every morning--but it heats my legs up and helps numb them a little.

Is there advice on how to get started somewhere in the 50 pages of this thread?

I seriously lack motivation, and I don't have a plan. However, there is a recumbent bike and an elliptical in my very small apartment. I'd like to use them for something other than hanging stuff.

Last spring, an in-shape colleague offered the good advice of starting off with 10 minutes on a machine each morning, before brushing my teeth or anything else. That didn't last more than a couple of days. I think I'm too programmed with a morning routine that usually involves getting nicely settled in front of the laptop for no good reason.

I guess it's my turn to provide a bit of an update. I'm pretty much an average shaped guy, but I've reached a point in my life where my metabolism has slowed down. A year ago, I ended basketball season at just under 200 lbs. It was probably the most I've ever weighed in my life.

Summer is great for me as I'm a lot more active and on the road a lot less. Walking on the golf course, biking, easier to make healthier meals, less beer, etc.

This basketball season I worked pretty hard at the gym. Got a heart rate monitor, which has helped. Got to the gym at least three and sometimes four times a week. Lifted, stretched, did cardio. Averaged probably a spin class a week for a couple of months. I was doing pretty well maintaining. I didn't feel like a slug in mid-February and my clothes fit well.

Then I got to March and I kind of fell off of the wagon. On the road a ton, lots of news on my beat, you know the drill.

I got back from the Final Four on Tuesday and I'm not sure when I was last at the gym. I think I went twice in March. Not good. After doing nothing yesterday and sleeping in today, I'm trying to get things back in order. I have bills to pay, laundry to do, a bunch of stuff on my TiVo to watch, taxes to finish.

Fortunately when I stepped on the scale this morning it wasn't that bad: 190. The bad news is that's up about four or five from the beginning of March, but the work I did the previous few months paid off. I'm in better shape than I was a year ago at this point. It's not much of a victory, but it's something. I'm going to head back to the gym here in a little bit and get back in my routine.

Not sure that anybody cares about this, but just thought I'd share.

Thanks Ragu. I just looked up some schedules and 90 minutes from now my ass will be on a spin bike for an hour.

I want to be skinny. But I'm pretty sure that's not possible, given my genetics and love of ice cream.

Instead, I'd like to be skinny enough that guys stop thinking I'm a fat chick and maybe want to date me. I know that's a bad motivation, but so is wanting my mom (no Twiggy herself) to stop telling me how fat I am every time we go shopping.

Self-loathing and anger haven't worked nearly well enough. I need a better reason to get away from the laptop.

I guess this is a bad time to confess to eating a bacon double cheeseburger, some fries and a vanilla frosty from Wendy's for lunch.

If it helps, I had a diet coke to wash it down and stopped by Uma's to say howdy and weighed myself on the scale at 196.

I think if I had any self discipline with my diet I'd be much faster on the bike and have enough endurance to kick it into gear on the last three laps at the crits. Instead, I get dropped with two laps to go.
