I had a great run tonight. Weather was perfect - just enough of a chill but didn't have to pile on sweats. I hate winter and am glad to see it go.

Since I am now officially committed to doing a triathlon in a little more than three weeks, I bought some jammers and hit the pool this morning. The 750 meters I did wasn't too bad. But it was indoor and not in open water. I'll try to swim two-three times per week and increase the distance from 750m to 1000 or 1250 by race time on May 12.

I also bit the bullet and purchased some real running shoes from a real running store. I'll try to follow up my biking and swimming with a 20-30 minute jog.

I'm not looking forward to this, but at least I'll be getting paid to do it.

I think I have designed the perfect workout program. I cleaned all the stuff off my stationary bike, and plan to start it tomorrow.

For every minute I waste moping about The Boy, I have to do 10 minutes on the bike (or the elliptical, once I figure out how to use it!)

Hopefully it'll improve both mind and body!

First off, a big round of applause to Idaho for his PM advice on a bike. I'll be picking up my new Trek 1500 on Wednesday.

In other news after some weight gain last week and taking the weekend off I'm down to 213 pounds. I have no idea why, but magically I dropped four pounds over the weekend. The interesting part is that Friday and Saturday are my off days. I think my metabolism is starting to resurrect itself.

Anyway...On July 4 of last year I checked in at 235, my fattest ever. Now I'm swimming, using the treadmill, lifting weights and soon will be riding a bike. It feels so amazing to run up the stairs at my apartment and not have to catch my breath before I take out my keys.

I've set my eyes on an October triathlon. I think in 10 weeks I will be in good enough shape to really go after a training regimen that lasts 12 weeks.

    I'll keep everyone updated.

Glad to help, GSpot. But I'll caution you that I am no expert on bikes, cycling or fitness. I'm a relative newbie who has been bitten hard by the bug, though.

My turn to crow... In lieu of a race (since my boss bogarts all the Saturdays off) I hauled ass through my weekly long run today. 13.4 miles in 1:45:42, which I think is in the neighborhood of 7:55 per mile. Nice, sprightly pace for a long-ish run and I'm psyched. Then again, let's see if I can do that off the bike in a couple months.

Yesterday I did three hours on the bike trainer, which is a PR for me. I just got tired of riding in the rain so I stayed indoors, cranked the iPod and cued up three hours' worth of old Ironman broadcasts. Gack.

Oasis ain't a bad riding partner, either.

My playlists are heavy on 90s alternative and hard rock from all eras. If that can't take my mind off riding in place, nothing will.

An informal poll. When you go to the gym, would you rather talk to people or be left alone to work out?

Left alone. And that means the 50-year-old guy on the bike next to me telling me he wants to get rid of his love handles by way of -- as he's winking and smiling at me -- splitting wood. Good times.
