Definitely, the guy took 30 minutes to watch and let me know exactly what I was doing when I walked and ran.

I wasn't about to say 'Hey thanks, what's the brand on that? Okay, I'm going to order it off the Internet'

My run this morning was less torture than usual. Just two miles, but a nice comfy cadence that I didn't push. I think one of my problems with running, and I should have realized this earlier, is that I didn't do much refueling between the swim/bike and the run. Sometimes, I'd just go from the pool to the locker room and put on the shoes before running.

Today, I remembered to take a GU gel and a bottle of water with me. Just that little extra caloric/hydrocarb boost made a nice difference. Sooooo, I'll need to remember to have my transition area at the tri well supplied with some GUs, Clif Blox and such. Pop a couple hundred easily digestable calories between stages and I should be OK for the race.

I still struggle with freestyle swimming, though. My breathing technique is terrible but I'm trying to force my way through several laps with my face in the water.

I keep the cell phone in the car and don't mind if people talk on the phone in the locker room - I have found most people with cell phones in the gym move to the locker room if the cell rings - but I will say this. Was at the gym yesterday and saw one of the trainers working with a client. I look closer and noticed that the trainer was punching up a number on his phone, then holding a casual conversation while the client was trying to figure out one of the machines. I would not have tolerated that if I was working with the trainer.

Did a mini-duathlon-ish type thing today (I guess).

After wanting nothing more than my legs to leave my body this morning (run yesterday am, weights pm) I got in the pool and on the bike this afternoon.

1.3 miles in the pool, 10 miles on the bike.

    I can dig it.

A tale of two runs. I mentioned the quick 13.4-miler from last weekend. Two days ago I ran for an hour and 40 minutes (no exact distance). Last week I took a Fuel Belt with Gatorade and water. This week I left both at home. Last week I recovered by the end of my desk shift that night. This week I was still sore last night.

In the words of triathlete Chris Legh in that Gatorade commercial, "I guess this stuff works."

Oh, and even at 145 pounds I swear by Asics Gel-Kayanos. I've worn them solidly for six years and have no intention of changing because I'm a biomechanical nightmare and need all the support I can get.

How do you break those up?

I did a fitness eval about eight weeks ago that required me to do as many pushups (21) in a minute and as many situps (41) in a minute as I could do.

I found interesting that the average...average...pushups for someone my age is 41 in 60 seconds so I rated in the poor category. The avg. situps for a person my age was 41.

Do you do sets of 20? 100 in the morning...100 in the afternoon? I need to start doing these, the basic premise of human strength!.

Mens Health rated the average number of push ups and situps.

    Age 20-29 (33p, 40s)
    30-39 (27p, 36s)
    40-49 (21p, 31s)
    50-59 (15p, 26s)

The do them in sets of 25. Gets it up there quicker. I like to do all my working out at once. You might slow down near the end, but the goal is to push back up as hard as you can if you begin to feel fatigued. I have some good push-up workouts if you want to know them.

Has anyone ever tried Olympic lifts (snatch, clean and jerk, power clean, etc.)?
I'd love to try them, but they probably frown upon them in my gym and they strike me as something you need to learn from a qualified coach and said coaching is probably beyond my means.

Gym where I work out has an area for them, far away from anyone else. If you go over there it is to do those lifts. If you screw up there's only the chance you'll hurt yourself.

A great pushup workout, brings you to complete fatigue quickly and efficiently: First set, as many as you can do until you hit failure--for me it's usually 40. Rest for a minute, repeat a set of 35. Rest, do another 30. Then 25. By the time you're at 20 and 15 you'll have no strength, but the shorter sets feel like a gift. By the last set of five, you know you've done something. Stretch in between sets, and when you're done.

And if you really want to challenge your body, jump on the treadmill in between sets, and run hard for a minute.
