    Shameless plug time:

I'm helping out with this dude's humantarian mission. It's a very good cause, fitness related and the guy is doing Ironman in a couple of months to raise awareness of the charity.

Idaho are you ready for this weekend? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on not only your performance but the tri overall as well. Tips and things that you'd never know until you run one.

In 72 hours, I'll be done with the tri and working on writing the story.

I'm mostly focusing on the completing -- not necessarily the competing -- angle and hope to set a mark for myself to improve on as I do future tris.

The weather is predicted to be 95 for a high, but we swim at 7 a.m. and it should be fairly cool. Swim will be no problem, but I'm not going to try and dominate the field in any way. I should do very well on the bike and then torture myself for 5k on an offroad running course. I ran 4 miles today to give myself some endurance, haha, work and I think it will be OK. Just don't look for my name among the top finishers in the 35-39 age group.

Was reading way back through this thread so I think a few people will be able to offer some advice. I had heard (and saw in this thread) how you're supposed to have a protein shake an hour or so before lifting and then another one immediately after. My question is what about days I don't work out?

I've found that it depends on your overall protein intake.

If you're at it hard, say 3-4 times a week, then you need to have your protein intake up all the time.

When I take days off I don't do protein shakes but I do make sure I have a high protein intake with things like turkey, cottage cheese, chicken etc.

Really, you should have nothing immediately after you lift....it messes up your insulin. Drink water and let your body cool down.

You need carbs after a heavy workout--they refuel the depleted muscles, and allow the damaged tissue to regenerate.

G-Spot has it right--if you're working out a lot, increase your overall protein intake all the time. Unlike carbs, which burn up pretty quickly if you're active, protein stays with you a lot longer.

And when in doubt, you cannot go wrong with a Met-Rx shake, a nearly perfect meal replacement/supplement. Try the chocolate.

Ok thanks, I could tell from looking back on this thread you know your shit on this so I hoped you'd check in. I didn't really mean literally immediately after I lift because I usually do cardio for at least an hour after I lift and really even after I get home and shower it's more like a half hour after I'm back from the gym before I make a shake. Thanks for that tip as well though.

Props to Idaho, who finished 346th in his race yesterday and wrote a couple pretty good stories about it. Congrats! You never have to run or swim again. :)

    But I like swimming.

And the results were updated. I placed 349th :(

I blame it on taking the transition zones very slowly and trying to catch my breath and -- I hate myself for this -- riding the bike course with the front brakes out of alignment and rubbing.

I hate to toot my own horn, but ...

I recently bought a heavy punching bag and a couple sets of boxing gloves and wraps. After one week of brief but intense boxing workouts, I have lost seven pounds! I couldn't believe it when I saw I had dipped just under 180 this morning. I hadn't weighed myself in about five days, and last time I was at 187.

Of course, doing yard work in the warm spring helps too, but I'm pretty stoked about this!

It is amazing to see just how quickly the weight melts off when you start working out. I think I lost seven pounds in three weeks when I first started. The weight is now steadily dropping and I'm under 210 for the first time since 2000.

If you're looking to lose weight, should you be drinking protein shakes?
