As long as you're burning more calories than you take in, why not?

Most people who want to 'lose weight' really mean they want to lose fat. Muscle weighs more than fat....add muscle, you might actually gain weight. But you'll be leaner.

About those protein shakes: read the labels. Some are loaded with sugars--no good. Some use protein that isn't really going to help you. Do your research. Same for the 'protein bars' and Power Bars, etc....you could just be adding ridiculous calories and carbs.

Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

I have a unique problem. I don't eat any meat, fish or poultry and I eat very little dairy or egg. Maybe a little every few weeks. My diet by nature, given what I enjoy (rice, veggies (75 percent of what I eat), pasta, beans), is carb heavy, even though I don't eat a lot of anything so it isn't like I am on a massive carb diet. I never thought about my protein intake much, because I felt fine, but I started to the last few years. I haven't been consistent about it, but I do give it a little consideration. I decided I needed a protein supplement, but it's extremely hard finding protein in a supplement that is vegan, which is what I want--I don't trust most stuff. It's compounded by the fact that most of the supplements are heavy in soy protein and I am not touching that--I don't think soy is very good for you. So I have settled on some rice protein supplements that I mix with water in the morning and choke down before I exercise. I'd say I do it only once or twice a week, though. My biggest problem is that I have no desire to eat in the morning. I really don't want to eat before late afternoon or early evening most days. But when I get hungry at night, I can scarf down all of my calories for the day at once, sleep on it and then get up and do my exercise/don't eat thing all over again.

I also realize this style of living is extremely innefficient and doesn't make best use of keeping my metabolism steady given the amount of calories I burn off in the morning. And while it isn't a problem right now, I am told it is going to catch up with me as I get older. So I am considering trying to make some lifestyle changes... Eating breakfast in the morning, whether I am hungry or not, before I exercise. Maybe a bowl of oatmeal and some kind of protein supplement--Odwalla Bars makes a vegan bar has higher protein content that I like, for example. I can do one of those, too. Then a half hour to an hour after I exercise, having a small meal or snack, to take advantage of the fact that my metabolism is still ramped up. And then seeing if I am less hungry at night and scaling back on the big late meal, maybe cutting myself well before bed.

Right now, I suspect my basal metabolic rate is much lower than necessary because of the fact that I burn off so many calories and then don't eat all day. My body is probably going into shut down and conserve mode. It works because I don't eat a lot. But I can probably eat more and not gain if I do this better. I am just not sure of the exact correct way to do it. I may need to experiment. But I'd be interested in what others have to say. I had this conversation with a guy who is about 15 years older than me this weekend who is in incredible shape. He has figured it out, and it got me thinking about it more.

Understood, but I don't get the protein shakes unless you're really trying to add mass.
I just follow my normal diet, whether I'm going to the gym that day or not. The only difference is I make more of effort to make sure I eat a light breakfast if I'm going to the gym. On nongym days, I often skip breakfast.

    The Protein Speech:

You just can't go wrong increasing your protein intake, especially if you're working out and burning a lot of calories.
--A good cardio workout burns up your excess sugar...why put it right back by eating more carbs? Your metabolism is cranked up, don't give it more sugar, let it burn your stored fat instead.
--Takes longer to digest than carbs or fat, so you feel full longer.
--Digestion of protein is more complex and uses more calories.
--Unlike carbs/sugars, protein doesn't mess with your blood sugar, so you don't get the cravings and hunger attacks.
--And even if you're not trying to build mass, you DO damage muscle tissue during a good workout, and you need to rebuild it.

Just returned from a 32 mile, 102 minute gruntfest on the roads. Had only four hours of sleep last night (thank you stupid late NBA playoff games!) so I was dragging a little. Sucked down a couple GU gels and felt better, but the bike just felt heavy for a while.

Oh, I also hate those bikers I pass in a cloud of dust who quietly pull up next to me five minutes later while I'm stopped at a red light. I blow away from them again only to get the same thing at the next big intersection.

Finally got back into the weight room. Lost a little on the bench, now getting up 205, but hopefully will work my way back up to where I was.

    Idaho...

I do my biking in the afternoons during the week and early morning on weekends. Should I be using something like Gu or Gatorade from the outset? I noticed this the first time the other day when I felt great for the first 10 miles then seemingly hit a wall. Chugging Gatorade at that point does little good because it takes so long to process. I managed about 4-5 miles after that, but that was it.

As if on cue I saw a guy down a power bar (or something like that) before he even started his ride. I assume it was to get him past the first wall as it would likely take 20 or so minutes to get into his system.

    Any suggestions?

The GU gels (or Clif Shots, Hammer Gels, JellyBellySport Beans, etc.) say you should eat one 15 minutes before you ride, and then one every 45 minutes during riding to maintain a little fuel in the system. They're a 100-calorie burst of energy that takes only a few minutes to metabolize.

I eat one before most rides, but had a little dinner last night first thinking it would get me through. I was wrong. I ate a gel, rested my legs at a little park, went potty and refilled the water bottles and was in good shape for the remaining portion of the ride.

I've got a 2 hour drive before my 52-mile road race on Saturday. So I plan on getting a couple of those things in me before I mount the bike and I'll carry 3-4 of them with me in the pockets. And I'll load the water bottles with gatorade or something like unto it to recharge the electrolytes. Should be a great morning for racing, assuming I get more than six hours of sleep. I'm half tempted to drive up to the race location after the game I'm covering is over the night before and sleep in the van so I can be there in plenty of time to warm up properly.

    Woohoo!

One of the best workouts I've had in months. 85 minutes in the saddle and cranked out 34 miles in a short dry run for tomorrow's race.

Hopefully, I'll actually be able to show up and post a top 10 finish in the old man age group.

Very nice, I just picked up a polar HRM w/ cadence to start really focusing on my training.
