But not before consulting a doctor if you're in pain. Squats can be devastating to your knees and back if you're not ready for them or overdo them.

Oy vay, no squats until your knees are solid, and maybe not even then!

Can you just skip the leg work for a little while, do some upper body stuff? Pushups, weights, etc?

And think about getting those knees looked at...if there's some damage there, it's only going to get worse.

I can't do squats. I have incredibly bad knees. A torn ACL that I didn't get fixed so the left one is very unstable on its best days, and a family history of knee replacements by the late 40s.

I've been doing weights, but I was trying to figure out some sort of cardio I could do.

And yea, 21, I should get them checked out. It's been a few years since I've had them looked at.

A simple thing I've been doing: I bought a plastic pitcher at Target (it's pretty, has blue fish on it) and keep it filled with water and slices of lemon, orange or lime. About six slices, mix and match. The fruit is good for about three days, as long as I keep refilling the pitcher. I'm drinking a lot more water because it's cold and tastes good without artificial sweeteners or strange chemicals.

What a great idea....I've been doing that for years, but I've been using vodka.

I think my recipe is for a different thread. I'm going to try yours today.

Folks, I've been really getting into some workouts lately. I dusted off my dumbells, and my triceps and shoulders are aching. So that's a good thing. Last night, I went on a slow jog. I covered about 1.5 miles. That was in addition to about 10 minutes on the bike. I substituted some running because the bike had caused some soreness in certain muscles that didn't seem to be affected by the jogging.

Anyway...In the past three days, I have been holding to a decent diet but have only lost about a pound. I sort of expected to lose more. But it's just not coming off that quickly. Is there a chance that the muscle I'm building is balancing things out? Because I can see a difference in my gut, but it's discouraging when there's no drop in weight accompanying it.

That's almost certainly what it is. That old "Muscle weighs more than fat" line isn't just a way to joke about being overweight; it's also true. People put too much emphasis on weight. It's just number. You obviously feel better about the way you've been working out more and the way you've been eating and you can see a difference in your gut... stop and think about that and then ask yourself if it's worth being discouraged by a number on a scale.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

When the number on the scale says 341, though, it's tough not to be discouraged. I really wanted to get into the 330s by Monday, which would mark a week since I really became serious about this. I guess I've lost about six pounds so far, but it's been about 1/3 pound per day for the past four or five days after really dropped four or five pounds (probably water weight) over the first few days.

By the way, I feel spectacular. I even found a gym filled with 20-something black dudes who play pick-up games every Saturday. I'm going do my version of Joe Pesci in The Super next Saturday. Should I wear tube socks with the thick stripes?

As long as you don't do your version of the guy from Along Came Polly, do whatever you gotta do. "Let it rainnnnn"

I believe watermelon is the best for the vodka, because it soaks up more :D

Either way, I'm coming to your house!
