Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

Basically, I realized I wasn't lifting that much, that I could lift more, and so I went for it. Did 255 a couple of times with no sweat, so I went for 270. Couldn't do it. Soon after, couldn't do much of anything. I was pretty good about warming up for chest, just like I do for my legs workout, which is easily my toughest one. The shoulder doesn't hurt so much as it is very weak and incapable of lifting even half of 270 unless I'm on an incline bench. I'm fighting a losing battle I presume against surgery down the line, though it's not like I have the time or money to afford it now. Figured I'd fish out for any cheap solutions.

I defer to Boom in all things muscular, but I'm thinking weight machines will take the stress off the shoulder....less chance of re-injury.

Headbutt ... You ever use the iso benches? I really like the iso bench press to work each side of the chest. You can work each arm individually to take stress off the other, etc. Plus, it's a nice change of pace from the regular bench or dumbbell bench.

Boom ... you ever do throw presses? You know, the ones where you use a smith machine and put 15 pounds on each side of the bar and toss it up in the air and catch it again? Those are fantastic for fast-twitch muscle work.

Flag..... I haven't. Hell I don't even know if my gym has them. I'll have to look tomorrow, since I've more than indulged on my week off from all things workout. Wind and rain be damned! I'm so used to shunning anything machine, and feeling like a wuss when I use them.

As for the Smith Machine. Anything I've read has been steadfast and vocal about how awful that thing is. It takes away so much from your stabilizing muscles that, if I ever owned a gym, I'd never even consider having one in there.

Either way, I think tomorrow I'm going to have to go for the all-around workout instead of my normal "focused" days of lifting.

Flag no I never have sounds like a good workout. Maybe 21 would let me toss her up and down as sub for smith machine.

I do every now and then do some medicine ball stuff which sound similair to the smith maching workout you discribe

The most intense pushups you will ever do (Headbutt, maybe not for that shoulder)...

    Lower yourself like regular pushup
Lift right hand and rotate body 90 degrees to right side, while maintaining lowered position
    Rotate back to center
Return to start position, repeat on other side.

Taught to me by very very top trainer of pros. Impossible to do, humbling to try.

Smith machine is evil, but if you try to do throw presses with a regular bar you're liable to kill yourself. :(

Hoo boy howdy! I thought this thread was about, hey, takin care of YOURSELF, like, on a long road trip and Deb's back home?

And you can ask Hideki about that, what the heck goes on in that crapper on the left, between innings, it ain't my business but I'm pretty sure he's taking care of himself, pretty damn good. Sounds like it anyway.

Well, okay, back to your bodybuilding dietary shit, but I gotta say, don't forget to take care of yourself, you too 21, guys like that kind of thing.

    OK...

First let me say that diet, exercise and all that is important. I myself have been trying to eat better, and hit the gym 3-5 times a week--although covering a major college that's 2 1/2 hours away makes it tough.

That being said... I can't stress moderation enough.

Let me tell you a story about a friend of mine. He ran cross country, never drank, never smoked.

One day, he had a brain aneurysm. He was dead in seconds.

What's my point? Sometimes diet and exercise aren't enough.

Take care of yourself, yes, but ENJOY LIFE. Don't entirely deny yourself what you enjoy--because you never know when your number's gonna be up.

Not that I'm endorsing somebody to go out and eat 20 Krispy Kremes every night...

A friend of mine who is a strength coach at a local prep school is going to run an adult circuit training class once a week next month. Figure I'll give it a shot. Could be a nice addition to the treadmill workouts that I'm currently doing 5-6 times a week.
