On another note, we have a fitness magazine in Calgary that is on the newsstands free of charge. It's a great magazine and contributors are often the top fitness professionals in Canada and exercise experts from the University of Calgary kinesiology department.

The May/June edition is the Cycling and Multisport Issue. It's full of good stuff ... I grabbed a copy thinking of a couple of you guys. Has some triathlon stuff in it, too.

If anyone wants a copy, PM me your mailing address and I'll grab a few more copies.

Well, my gym attendance has flagged a little in the last weekish. So, to keep the trend going, I worked out at home today. But it was a damn good workout.

Crossfit's "Cindy" -- five pullups, 10 pushups, 15 squats, as many rounds as you can do in 20 minutes. I got 14 rounds in 20:04, a PR by two rounds. That's a total of 70 pullups, 140 pushups and 210 squats -- 420 reps in 20 minutes.

I've done this workout four times now, and I've improved by two rounds each time. I'm pretty happy with being able to knock out two more even though I have only worked out five times in the last 15 days or so. My baseline for fitness is so much better than it was even two months ago, it's not even funny.

For I-T, Idaho, Flash, Mr. Foreskin and everyone else, keep up the good work. Reading your exploits when the motivation is lacking is a source of inspiration.

I've hit a rut. My triathlon training and road race training should be in a perfect marriage right now because of the state time trial championships in a couple of weeks. But I'm struggling to get out on the road on that bike. To do it right, I need a long, lonely road with hardly any traffic or stops. That means driving to find one. I've got too many kids to do that appropriately.

    Arghh.

So, that means I'm going to the gym tomorrow -- twice if I have to -- for 60 minute spin classes where I do nothing but crank the resistance up and suffer with as little variation in the cadence and HR as possible. I'd love to lock it in at 90 cranks per minute at 160-170 HR and slowly turn it up a notch or two to 95-100 rpms for the final few miles.

The race I'm hoping to do well in is a flat as a board, 40k out and back in the middle of nowhere. I think it might be the only time I race with an iPod. I guess the trick will be to find 60 minutes worth of songs featuring the right beat.

But the swim is going great. I can sail along for a mile in about 45 minutes without much effort. Transition that to open water, though, and I'll probably be singing a different song.

Running, though, is off. Other than chasing midgets around the house I haven't run in more than a week. Boooo.

Today was my normal chest day and I have noticed a great deal of gains since I began back doing regular lifting. When I started, I could get up 125 lbs. on the incline bench for a max of eight reps. Today when I went, I maxed out at 205 lbs and got six up. My weight is still around 176 lbs, which is good, but I switched to a new protein mix (NitroTech) for a month to see how it goes.

I want to try these at some point. Hopefully I don't kill myself.

    Head, meet bar.
    Ass, meet ground.

That's what I was thinking, but I am going to try to swing myself far enough back so that I won't mash my head on the bar.

Hell, try going from one bar to the other -- higher -- bar and then back, the flying pullup. Not that I can do them, mind you, but you should try. And report back.

I don't know about all that. I would need to find a local school that has it in their playground, or maybe a life trail somewhere. I am going to try the clap pullups the next time I have arms (Friday), if I am back from my road trip.

Well, I skipped my legs workout for the second straight week. I had pushed it back to today. Then I woke up with a migraine headache, a yucky tummy and a giant feature story to write. I finished the story by noon and spent two hours trying to shave it down to 20 inches. I gave up at 25 and sent the damn thing up the chain. It appears my cardio will involve moving things and pricing things for this weekend's rummage sale. I'm going to try shoulders and legs on Thursday and back and biceps on Friday.

Rumple, I might be able to push up 125 on inclines but just once. My regular bench is up to 145 now. I'm doing five reps. I want to increase that to 10 before I move up. If I can come down 70 on my weight and go up 70 on my bench by the end of the year, I'll make my ultimate goal: benching my own weight. From there, everything else is gravy. Wait. I can't have gravy. Make that some sort of yogurt-based glop.

From Guy Clark, "Texas Cookin' "

I'm going down to Austin, Texas
I'm going down to save my soul
    Get that bar-b-que and chili
Eat my fill then come back home
I'm gonna take my baby with me
We gonna have a high ol' time
We gonna eat till we get silly
Sho' do make a beer taste fine

    Chorus
Oh my, momma ain't that Texas Cookin' something
Oh my, momma it'll stop yo' belly and backbone bumpin'
Oh my, momma ain't that Texas Cookin' good
Oh my, momma eat it everyday if I could

I know a man that cook armadillo
tastes so sweet he calls it pie
I know a woman makes pan dulce
tastes so good it gets you high

    Get them enchiladas greasy
    get them steaks chicken fried
Sho' do make a man feel happy
to see white gravy on the side

    Chorus

I know a place that got fried okra
    beat anything I ever saw
I know a man that cook cabrito
it must be against the law

We gonna get a big ol' sausage
a big ol' plate of ranch style beans
I could eat the heart of Texas
we gonna need some brand new jeans

    Chorus

Damn, I think I'll make me some gravy tonight. I love white gravy.

22 hard miles with a lot of high cadence climbing. My legs were fried after 45 minutes but I soldiered on.

Then I went to yoga. I feel like a new -- more flexible -- man.
