Interesting. I have a pair of New Balance, but they aren't running shoes. I am planning to invest in a pair of actual running shoes this weekend. When you say go to Asics, you do mean the store, right? As opposed to some sort of corporate testing facility where guys in white coats will design a golden shoe dubbed the Nike Fuck Force Five.

By the way, are you suggesting that someone once took advice from Boom? ;)

New Balance running shoes are also considered the gold standard by many runners.

They also have the best selection of widths around, and are a very well-made shoe from right in the Boston area, I believe.

I have a pair of New Balance as well, mostly because they come in a wide width. It's one thing to squeeze my foot into a too narrow shoe for a night out, quite another to do it when I'm trying to work out.

The woman at Lady Foot Locker insisted I should just buy up a half size and get Nikes. I was less than impressed with those. I trip over them cause they're too long.

And yes, NB's are made somewhere in the states.

After gorging on ribs and cheesy taters last night, I weighed in at 173 today. Ugh.

    Today
Squat clean (which is a clean into a full squat, then stand up) 105 pounds (7 reps), shoulder press 75 pounds (15 reps), five rounds in 16:56.

Pullups (6), knees to elbows (10), five rounds in 6:47.

Ran on the treadmill: 0.14 mile, 0.33 mile, 0.25 mile in 1:34, 0.25 mile in 1:25. That last one was run at 11 mph, which was pretty easy until about 0.15 in, then the last tenth of a mile kicked my ass.

    Joe,

You're a wild man. But aren't you supposed to be on some safari to Seattle soon? And why is it that there's never a gathering in Florida?

I'm kinda somewhere between mild and wild. Seattle is next week, with hiking on Mount Rainier on Friday morning (and I'm still taking calls for folks who want to join in).

I am not the keeper of the official SJ outings scrolls. That's Moddy's department.

And, dude. Your example is encouragement to us all. You're kicking ass.

    Big crit race today.

I pedaled in from home for a warmup and got in a few practice laps on the 1.2 mile, mildly hilly course. ~40 of us in the group and I just hung out playing it safe waiting for the moment.

As one or two people were dropped with each lap I hung in with the main group and on the final lap, feeling surprisingly strong, I attacked on the outside while the group rounded a turn. I attack five seconds too late, though, and the next turn in the road came too soon and I was pinched off from my charge by the group as it zig-zagged back across the road.

They should have held their line -- that's a big thing in cycling, holding your line -- and I ended up being pushed into the gutter and curb. I stayed upright, but lost all my momentum going into the final .5 miles.

I was about 10th with a lot of speed when I was curbed and lost everything. So I soft pedaled in from there with a 28th-place finish. Despite the little incident, I'm happy with the race.

Ended up with 46 miles on the day and had a 41 mile training ride yesterday with moderate climbing for the first 15 miles.

Next two weekends are triathlon weekends.

After seeing photos of that crash in Mexico and hearing your tale, I'm scared to get on a bike. But I will. I'm getting fitted next week. Then I might hang back a few weeks and see whether I can land a used bike on Craigslist. I really don't have the money to fork over for a good road bike, and the definitions with those street-style bikes scares me. It talks about being good for a 10-mile commute, etc. I'm looking to go 30-40 miles. Like you. Although at a much slower pace.

And guess what? I decided that I'm going horseback riding as soon as I'm fairly sure the horse won't collapse under my weight. I'm looking forward to that.

IS, you could probably get a (decent) road bike for $500. I don't know if that's out of your range, but you don't have to spend $2-GRAND to start.

I usually don't post here, but am looking for a circuit training routine. I don't like to spend a lot of time at the gym 30-40 mins and want to make the most of it. I need to drop like 5-10 lbs and maybe a 1/2" off my waist (I used to be a 34 for everything, now its like 34-36 depending on the cut).

    thx

    Today

12 burpees, 12 pullups, 10 rounds for time. Took me 39:55, five seconds less than the upper range of what I wanted to hit (36:00 to 40:00). The first few rounds weren't too bad, and I cranked out the pullups pretty well. But after about the fourth round, man, they got slower and slower. On the last round of pullups, the last five were singles. Shitski.

Fewer beers yesterday might have made a difference today. Or not.

32 miles. Hard climb up and down a mountain, then turn around and do it again.

Followed by two beef and cheddars at Arby's. :)

Oh, a beef and cheddar. Those suckers are incredible. I have some chicken breast marinating in Frank's buffalo sauce. I'm going to eat about a 6-ounce chunk on a 100 percent whole wheat bun with shredded lettuce and this Bolthouse Farms ranch dressing that's made with yogurt.
