Tomorrow is my last day on weights until I get back from vacation. That sucks! I'm getting my trainer to compose a bodyweight-only program that I can do.

Found out my university gym charges drop-in rates for alumni now. They never used to ... and I suppose those annual donations we make doesn't merit the privilege anymore. It has me in kind of a foul mood about my alma mater.

Finished second overall at the 5K I ran on Thursday. Won my age category in 17:54. I was wheezing near the end. I need to get back into running mode.

    Today
"Fran": 95-pound thrusters, pullups, rounds of 21-15-9. The last time this came up was the middle of May, and I scaled to 75-pound thrusters, so this was my first time using 95 pounds. With 75 pounds, it took me 12:07. Today, with the 95 pounds, it took 15:59. And I tore the shit out of my left palm doing pullups. During this past weekend's CrossFit Games, it was the first of three competitions on Saturday, except the pullups had to be chest to bar. I probably got a third of mine chest high; the rest were chin over.

Five-pound dumbell holds, arm shoulder level in front of me, five minutes each arm. Owwie.

    Thirty dips.

Ten minutes on the rowing machine netted me 2,338 meters. Not exactly Olympic standard.

I'll do a page from the Joe playbook. I have been running regularly, but not nearly as hard as I had been. It has been a combination of laziness, having had gotten too thin and being tired all the time because I have some sort of sleep disorder that I have no handle on. I slept as well as I have in a month last night and got out for a 10 mile run this morning (it was exactly 10 miles according to the markers. I have lost a lot in the last 2 months. I did it in about 75 to 80 minutes (I didn't keep a good time, though), which made me feel bad. What made me feel worse was that it was not relaxed, comfortable running. I had to talk myself through it. But I was really determined -- even when I thought I saw a tortoise pass me along the way. I think it's time to go back on a tear. Afterward, when I got back, I did my crunches and some weighted side bends and threw in some pull ups and push ups (not things I excel at). I want to get fast, but also not appear too thin if I get super light again.

Any thoughts on the low calorie G2 stuff? I'd like less calories after my workout since I am trying to lose weight but I wonder if sucrolose is a good idea. Am I better off going with the regular stuff?

I'm hesitant on new shit until it's proven. I'm all about regular gatorade until I'm absolutely sure the new stuff is better.

I like it a lot better.

It does the job and is WAY less sweet/sugary. I used to hate that feeling like my teeth were growing fur after drinking half a bottle.

nasty, painful, recurring, ugly, crippling pain in my back the last few days.

So what do I do the morning after pulling up lame during a time trial race? I go on a 57-mile ride -- the day before I have a triathlon.

    I'm stoopid.

No wonder my back is giving me problems. I won't let it recover.

It's just not healthy to do what you're doing Idaho. You're body is talking. Listen. I'd pass on the triathlon unless it's around the block for a jog, around the corner on the bike, and one lap in the pool. Unless everything is building up to this event. If it's just an event that's part of a larger competitive or fitness plan, I'd take the short-term loss to avoid long-term disaster.

A friend who is a marathoner overextended his training and wound up with some sort of muscle strain in his lower abs (suffered playing with his 8-year-old nephew after a hard week of training) that the doctor said probably would not have happened had he not been so darn physically whipped from his extensive training. It has kept him from being able to run, which is just KILLING him. He keeps bitching that he shouldn't have pushed so hard and listened to his body when it was communicating to him that he was breaking down.

Well, I'll be home Sunday for the first time in two weeks. July was supposed to be about swimming in anticipation of my sprint triathlon goal. I had a nice swim in the Keys and then swam at a hotel in Palm Beach, my friend's back yard pool for two days and my father-in-law's community pool for two days. I also did a little workout in the community gym while visiting my wife's uncle.

I managed to go 1,000 meters today in the pool. I think some of the other folks were intrigued. I heard some mumbling about how I'd been at it for a good while. I guess that's more than a sprint triathlon distance. I'm not bad, but I could use some work. I spent an hour tonight watching video of Dave Scott, the Ironman legend who I once interviewed without knowing who he was. It provided some great tips on improving my stroke and swimming in open water. I have some drills to do.

I am signing up soon for a full triathlon that is on September 1st. We'll see how I can train for it. The swim is going to be the hardest for me.

Full as in 112-mile bike, 26-mile run and 2.5-mile swim?

You might need more than a month's training for that. I assume you're talking about a half.
