    Today
Push jerk, five sets, three reps each: 65, 75, 85, 95, 105. Form sucks hard. Driving that bar straight overhead into a locked-out position while jumping under it is just damn unnatural. And I scraped the shit out of my nose a couple of times with the bar. Yeah, I got a big nose. Need more practice at home with the broomstick to get the form down.

Row 2k in 7:57. Fuck me, I wanted to puke.

    Fifty back extensions in 2:09.

36 pretty easy miles with about 2,300 feet of ascent. No hard pushing, just steady riding.

125 miles, 50 at race pace, coming up on Saturday, then a 170 mile race the next week.

I don't know about 125 miles. That seems like a lot. My quads are fatigued after a much shorter ride. Do I need to develop more leg strength or is it just a matter of developing endurance?

    Had my chest workout today:

    Incline Bench - 10 X 135, 8 X 155, 8 X 175
    Decline Bench - 12 X 135, 8 X 175, 6 X 225
    Incline DB Press - 10 X 50, 10 X 70, 6 X 80

The 80-pound DB press really surprised me and I am glad I can get that. Soon enough, I am going to try to get up the 100s.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Strength equals endurance, eh?

Italian, 125 mile bike rides, especially if there is any climbing of significance, are not for people who aren't in phenomenal shape. A decent rider might average anywhere from 18 to 23 mph. Do the math: That is anywhere from 5 to 7 hours of intense riding for anyone who doesn't train all year round and ride in the Tour De France (although the climbs in the European Stage races are insane compared to what most people in the U.S. ride).

I used to be in good shape, but not Lance Armstrong shape by a mile, and I biked a lot. I was younger, and we would do 40 to 60 mile weekend rides with some small climbing and I'd be spent after most rides. We did about the flattest century (100 miles) there is once and it still damn near killed me, even without the climbs. I'm not sure if you are serious, but you should set your goals modestly. Don't try 125 mile rides or even 50 mile rides. Until you cross a threshold into good shape, just get on the bike consistently and try to raise your heart rate for an hour every day or two so you get it beating to about 70 to 80 percent of your max (based on your weight and age). Don't try to set speed records. Worry about keeping a consistent heart rate that is pushing it, but doesn't have you on the verge of bonking. You can figure it out with a heart rate monitor or by doing a google search to figure out what a suggested number of beats per minute is for your weight and age, and then take your pulse periodically with a finger while ride.

Did some reading for you. Here's a quote I lifted from one of my fitness forums:

"There have been studies, backed up by Friel, that hard gym efforts followed by hill climbs in the same day generate more rapid threshold power increases."

I'm not entirely sure what ultra and century cycling are but they seem to have a great resource for strength training and cycling: http://www.ultracycling.com/training/century.html

I don't expect to get to 125 miles. But I might be in that ballpark one of these days. I'm just looking for gradual improvement. I have been riding for six months. I average anywhere from 16-20 mph. I had worked up to 21 mph. But I took a few weeks off.

My longest ride was two hours and about 35 miles. My goal is to get to 50 miles in about three hours. I think that's reachable. But that'd be an occasional thing. I don't have the time to dedicate three hours per day to riding a bike.

My legs ached this morning. But I managed another 80 minutes, which was 20 miles. I slowly increased the resistance from 4 to 10. I spent 10 minutes at maximum resistance just before the Tour boys hit the the peak of the first mountain. I was extremely relieved to drop down to the lowest resistance setting. After all, we were going downhill. Fortunately, I didn't have any hairpin turns on the side of a mountain. But I did spill some water on myself.

Awesome. Thanks. Interesting stuff. Since I can hardly walk, I'll have plenty of time pick through it and some other sites.
