But I'm told they have free pizza and Tootsie Rolls for their members.

Scroll down. On Sept. 11, pick your own hero workout. Because I did "Murph" a couple weeks ago, I'm going with "Daniel." It's gonna hurt. It's gonna be good.

EDIT: I'm doing tomorrow's workout in honor of Army Sgt. Bryan Brewster, son of Sun and Daily Bulletin sports editor Louis Brewster, who was killed in May 2006. Knowing his father, I wish I would have met Bryan.

I've never thrown up after a workout, but I almost did today. I did a Tabata interval with kettlebell swings and pushups (20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, repeat for four minutes alternating between the two movements). Then I did six prowler sprints, upper handles on the way down, lower handles on the way back.
I've also decided to take the plunge and do a bench, deadlift or push-pull (bench and deadlift) meet sometime between December and March if there's one close enough that falls on a weekend when there isn't likely to be a work conflict.

The tabatas I've done finish one exercise -- eight rounds -- before moving on to the next. That's all I got.

The upside of hooking up the mini-fridge in the garage is that I got to suck down some cold water this afternoon. The downside is that today's workout almost made me hurl and/or pass out. The soccer moms must be talking. My shorts were still soaked when I walked down the street to pick up little Rocky from kindergarten. One lady looked at me as if I might go into cardiac arrest. Another lady gave me a look that said she wanted to use up what was left of my energy.

I don't know what to think about my bent-over dumb bell rows. I started with 55-pounders and finished with five reps at 85 pounds. I was shocked that I could pull up 85 pounds with one arm. I'm even trying to figure out whether I might have been cheating somehow. I felt a slight strain in my mid-back region, and I discovered that my forearms get pissed off when I try to lift that much weight. But I'm extremely thrilled to be making this much progress.

Friday is my first time covering the school where Adrian works. In the past, I was intimidated by those rockhead football coaches. Not anymore.

    Today's "Daniel": 50 pullups, run a quarter-mile, 21 95-pound thrusters, run a half-mile, 21 thrusters, run a quarter-mile, 50 more pullups.

I jacked my left lower back the other day doing those 55 205-pound deadlifts, so today's workout was painful. I almost quit after the second round of thrusters -- but then I thought, If I were in Iraq or Afghanistan, I wouldn't have the option of quitting. And although no one but me would know, I didn't want to quit because of who I was doing the workout for: Bryan Brewster. It might sound strange, but for a moment, standing on the treadmill, I felt a touch of kinship with Bryan, and that was enough to get my ass moving again.

    Rest in peace, Bryan.

    Total time = 45:02.

Today, clean and jerk 3-3-3-3-3: 85, 95, 105, 110, 115. Got two at 125, missed the third pretty badly on the jerk. Took a few seconds, did the full squat clean easily and was just locking out the elbows away from making it -- I mean, like, another inch on each arm. Fuck a duck. Again, as always, need to start heavier.

    Dips, 30 in 4:26.

Pullups, 30 in 6:27. Yesterday's 100 total pullups killed me today.

Tomorrow, my 13th consecutive Mizzou game weekend with college friends and their spouses. Two more years until I design our 15th anniversary T-shirts.

I 'raced' this road on Saturday.

(pic is way too big to post)

I say 'raced' because my legs were dead and I finished DFL by more than two minutes on the entire field.

I'm shakin' up my life ... getting up at 6:30 a.m. and going to the gym, instead of going to work. Coming home to shower and then heading to the office.

It should leave me more time to live.

Day 1. So far, so good.

I have considered trying a 5:30 a.m. workout. But I know that I will not commit to something like that. In fact, I didn't start exercising today until 7 p.m. But I can't complain. I had the garage door open, and the air wasn't sweltering. Plus, I had a lightning storm accompaniment to B.B. King. It was kind of cool.

Today, "The Chief": In order, 3 100-pound power cleans, 6 pushups, 9 squats. Five rounds of three minutes each, one minute rest between rounds, as many cycles through the rotation you can do.

Rounds 1 and 2, four full cycles. Round 3, three full rounds and 6 squats. Round 4, three full rounds and 6 pushups. Round 5, three full rounds and 3 power cleans.

I came down with a sinus infection late Sunday night. Yesterday was bad, but trying to sleep with a gallon of mucus clogging my throat and nose made sleeping last night a hit-and-miss proposition. When I got done with the workout, I thought I was going to puke.
