I was in bed by 9 p.m. last night. Got a wicked night of sleep. It was amazing. Maybe I've found the secret?

Today, "Fran": Scaled from 95-pound thrusters to 85-pounders because my left elbow is damn near kaput, pullups, 21-15-9.

    Thruster sets were: 14, 7 -- 10, 5 -- 7, 2.
    Pullups were: 7, 6, 5, 3 -- 5, 4, 3, 3 -- 3, 2, 2, 2.

Total time, 12:53, which I think is a PR for the 85-pound weight by 30 seconds or more.

Wow. Is that a seat? It doesn't appear to have much cushioning.

    Padded seats are for sissies!

My current saddle is only 120 grams, has carbon rails and is about four inches wide at its widest.

After my 13 hour ride I had a little saddle sore, but that was because I forgot the chamois cream. The 11.5 hour race I just completed left my taint happy as could be.

A tiny little saddle is better for your booty than the big thick padded ones.

But the bike above is my dream bike. And friend of mine is hooking me up with a gently used (600 miles) one his teammate just raced on.

Today, "Grace": Clean and jerk 30 reps for time.

The last time this came up, I used 80 pounds and finished in 4:04. This time, I used 115 pounds and finished in 12:26. The sweat, she did roll.

I do the early morning workout. Sometimes up at 4, sometimes at 5, sometimes at 6. No matter how late I stay up -- and I'll be up late night -- I still do it. I just work better that way getting a run and my exercise in first thing in the morning. If I wait, I can't do it later in the day. I lose energy. It took a lot of retraining, but it works.

I think I've been a morning person in denial all this time. I'm almost one week in and I'm sleeping better at night, jumping out of bed 10 minutes before the alarm goes off, and feeling great.

And Shep is loving it, too. He gets his walk before I head to the gym and I've never seen him so lively on the walk!

    Been starting to do deadlifts and squats. This week, my workout for deadlifts were: 10 X 135, 6 X 225, 6 X 245. Squats were -- 10 X 135, 6 X 185, 6 X 195. I've increased both pretty well in three weeks.

Been back in the gym consistently here lately, and it's been fantastic. My mind is clear, I feel relaxed and I leave relieved every time. It's a must in my regular routine.

I was sore again Friday from my back and biceps stuff. I guess that means it's working. Today, I did 200 toe-touchers, 50 squats and 25 arm curls on a T-ball diamond. Tropical Storm Fay has been gone for four weeks, but there is still water draining off this city's baseball fields. That put field maintenance well behind schedule. The season is starting a few weeks late. I can't imagine how Ike affected prep sports and so many other things in Texas. Certainly, games must have been postponed for two weeks now in places like Houston and Galveston.

Tonight, I pressed 195 pounds four times with no spotter. It really zapped me for the rest of my workout. But I was encouraged. My original goal was 200 by the end of August. Then I extended it a month. I have next week to get to 200, and I think I'll do it.

I wonder at what point I can consider myself relatively strong...
