Take care of yourself

    Today, 75-pound bar for thrusters (5), hang power clean (7), sumo deadlift high pull (10), as many rounds as you can do in 20 minutes. Seemed simple. Wasn't.

    I got seven full rounds plus the thrusters, the cleans and six of the sumo deadlifts in the 20 minutes. About 15 minutes in, as I was gasping for breath, a dude working behind me on some cable shit said, "Don't puke." I didn't have enough breath to tell him to fuck off. But I was thinking it.

    Had legs today and went 4 X 225 on squats. It felt pretty easy, so I'm going to move up from there. In other news, my incline bench is much stronger than my flat. Is that normal?

    Well, I've been avoiding this thread because I'm woefully out of shape and embarrassed about it. Being chained behind a desk for 12 years as a copy editor had me develop some really bad habits and it showed in the waistline. I've never been a "skinny" kid. I was always the one picked on for being fat (etc.) in middle and high school. I've seen friends drop weight while they've seen me add it on. You ever hear the expression "I can look at a cheeseburger and gain 5 pounds", well it seems to apply to me pretty good. Then again, I just don't look at the cheeseburger. It tends to disappear.

    However, with this new job I started I find myself on my feet at least 6 hours every day and it's not standing at a toll booth or something like that. I walk around and help people as best I can. In the end, on a given day I'll probably walk at least 4 miles throughout the store. Today, I do my first 8-hour shift in the store. I'm hoping I might be able to squeeze out 5 to 5.5 miles today.

    Either way, I've been feeling a lot better lately and I hope it keeps up. With the holiday season coming up I'll probably find myself doing a hell of a lot more walking as well, that and dodging and evading shopping carts and angry/wantful shoppers :D

    If anyone would like to pass on some good diet tips for this rather large fellow, I'd be more than open to them.

    My diet tip, and I'm a large single guy that eats out most every meal...

    Cut back a little at a time. One of my breakfast staples has been a value meal from McDonalds (it's right next to work, and it's quick and easy)... Well, I cut out the hash browns and just have a McMuffin.

    Yes, I could do better by cooking at home, but it's a cut back, and every cut back helps.

    Try keeping a food diary, and write down everything you eat. You don't even have to count the calories to see exactly how much you're eating. From there, try to cut back and eat healthier. Fast food is your enemy.

    Matt, I appreciate the effort you are making, and without knowing specifics (I haven't eaten in a McDonalds in at least two decades), I actually think an egg McMuffin is one of the more relatively harmless things on the menu. But you still are going to need to cut out that stuff entirely, as I am sure you know. Forget the calories. It is fat laden, probably high in saturated fat, and definitely not healthy--even without the hash browns. Diets like those contribute to heart disease and probably increase risk of several other things, including various kinds of cancer. Can you think about that when the temptation is there? There are so many things you can do for breakfast that are relatively easy. A hot 5-grain cereal (something with barley, triticale, oats, flax and rye is a good choice, or even just cooked oats, like Quaker Oats. All you have to do is measure out half a cup, add a cup of water and pop it into the microwave for three minutes. It takes about the same amount of time it is taking you to go that McDonalds, place your order and get your food. But that alternative has no saturated fat, is low in fat and gives you a heaping dose of fiber (which is good for your heart, as opposed to bad for it) and various nutrients. It comes down to choices. And I am not in your shoes, so maybe I am naive to believe that you can make changes all at once -- it might be a formula for not making the changes permanent. But each day you are eating McDonald's and food like that is a day you are eating unhealthy, so it really benefits you to get into better habits quickly.

    This is probably something that can work for a lot of people struggling with losing weight. I don't worry about my weight as much as I worry about doing healthy things. If you do the healthy things, the weight control will follow. That means things like a low-fat diet, lots of leafy green vegetables, not overeating, getting plenty of fiber, etc. And it means a lot of exercise (which has the added effect of leveling me because I am really mental without the endorphin high I get from it). If you just do the common sense things that have been proven to be healthy, your weight goals will likely follow. It beats just trying to lose weight -- by any means possible -- because you are taking more of a holistic approach to it. Trying to do heart-healthy things and reducing your risks of other diseases, too.

    Today, 8 burpees and 8 pullups, 12.5 sets for 100 each in 28:56. I was hoping to break 25:00. Next time.

    Overhead squats with that 15- or 20-pound bar. Set of 10, added five pounds on each side, two sets of 10. Tried the 45-pound Olympic bar and got five, but they were fer shit. Did another set of 10 with the lighter bar. Works the traps something powerful.

    With the straight bar, I went up to 275, but I was mostly just trying to learn the form.

    Keep the bar as close to your shins as you can, even if it means dragging the wurl on your knees. I know a coule of good links on deads. Will post when I get in tomorrow.

    If you are in a competition, using straps and a belt take you out of the "raw" portion correct?
