I'm excited for an ass-kicking not at the hands of my trainer tonight ... on the agenda: one-hour spin class then 45-minute-long "abs and glutes" class. Yes, I spend Friday evenings at the y.

I used to do spin classes and loved it. Haven't gotten back into it, though.

Once I know I'm in good enough shape to do it/am settled in a place where I don't feel like I'll be wanting to move in six months, I hope to become a part-time spin instructor. I'm addicted. :)

Question for those who know ... why does one quad hurt more than the other when you work them equally? and are there any other really good stretches for the quads other than pulling up your ankle while standing?

More than likely you have a muscle imbalance so one is working hard to catch up to the other. You might want to look into single-leg exercises to ensure they strengthen to the same resistance level, instead of one leg compensating for the other on dual-leg exercises.

Christ, I hope that makes sense. I've been drinking all night.

    Stretches?

    Here's a good one:

Interesting article, and video, about stretching in The New York Times. The gist is that static stretching is completely wrong before a workout, that it can fatigue the muscles and adversely affect your workout.

This week I started stretching the way it advocates, and I like the results so far. The Spider-Man crawl is especially good to loosen up those hip flexors and such.

Dynamic stretching before a workout ... light static stretching afterwards. Pulling a cold muscle to its limits can promote or lead to injury.

vocab lesson: dynamic vs. static stretching?

Re: Take care of yourself (LiveSTRONG)

Static: Pulling the muscle to a point of tension and holding (a.k.a. traditional stretching)

Dynamic: functional, light exercises which use sport-specific movements, such as controlled leg and arm swings

You might also hear about ballistic stretching, which takes static stretching into a level of bouncing or jerky movements and which can be very dangerous to ligaments and tendons.

During Monday's deadlift workout I ripped the shit out of my shins. Next time I'll remember long socks and/or sweatpants.
