Only problem I have with that, Xan, is that the alternatives aren't healthy either. Eating something with 100 grams of fat is obscene, but suggesting something with 20 grams and saturated fat in it, is still very bad advice. It's still unhealthy, just not as unhealthy. It's like telling me to drive after 5 or 6 drinks instead of doing it after 20 drinks.

215 for four sets of five. Yay me.

Does anyone have recommendations for heart rate monitors?

Polar... I have a few. I rarely use one anymore, because I can gauge my exertion level without one.

I have never used one with a million bells and whistles. It doesn't make sense to me and is a distraction from actually exercising. But a basic model that gives you a heart rate read out, times you and keeps a record of your heart rate is a great tool. The Polar A3 or A4 are both great choices, or the more basic ones in their F series are fine. Even something as simple as the F1, which will just measure your heart rate and give you a stop watch, is fine for most people.

It's 12:15. I have to be at the stadium at 5 for my college game tonight. Someone talk me into lifting today.

Do it ... or you'll regret it sit at the football game all day thinking 'damn, I should have lifted.' Then you won't be able to concentrate on the football, you won't be able to write a decent story, dinner will taste like crap, and you won't have as good a sleep as you could have.

Missing the gym turns the entire day to shit, see? :D

Fine, I'll got for my swim. Sheesh. I get the hints. ;)

Flash, you're so good at kicking folks' asses without them asking for it ... :)

    I should be a part-time gym motivator.

    Today

    125-pound bench press, max pullups, five rounds: 9 (11), 6 (13), 5 (6 w/palms facing each other), 3 (8), 4 (7) = 72. Meh.

Back squats, 5 sets of 5: 145, 155, 165, 175, 185 (with a little help on the last two). Eh.

After seven days off, though, I'll take it.

Flash: Do you do your squats in a rack or freestyle? Either way, damn nice on the 215.

I do Olympic squats in a power rack, because I don't use a spotter.

Is that what you mean? You don't mean a Smith machine, do you? Yuck.

And thanks. I'm staying at 215 for a month of so to work on my deadlift now.

Is the rack one that has the fixed bar that goes at an angle and you lock it out with hooks? That's the kind I used before I started doing squats with just the bar and weights on my shoulders.

I use a spotter when I get to the heavier weights, such as when I do my max one rep or today's five reps of 185.
