March has sucked major league rocks. We'll see how well I do. Maybe I should wear the Cubs shirt, they can mock the guy in the back that way ...

Just played two hours of three-on-three half court hoops, first time I've played in about two years. I thought I was in decent shape, but I absolutely thought I was going to need an ambulance at the end of the first two games I played. Took a break, let someone take my place, did some sprints to try to get used to the constant moving and what not, and I felt a lot better in the third and fourth games. But man, those first two games were a serious eye opener.

For the first time in two years, four games is impressive. I'd hate to see what kind of shape I'd be in after four games right now. That'd be a giant debacle of a scene.

Pick-up basketball is the best workout there is, other than running. It's more fun, though. You have to go full court, though. :)

I love that feeling of winning, so you get to stay on the court, but after you win 4 or 5 in a row (usually because my teammates carry me), you are just dead... but you can't not try to win and stay on the court, even if you are chugging to get back down court on defense (and in my game, if you don't get your butt back, you'll have someone calling you out).

Wish me luck ... or don't. I'm off to do the Cooper River Bridge Run. If all goes well, I'll finish on my feet and not in the back of an ambulance. ;D

    No problem ... good luck.

And there was one amazing bit of health-related news from the run. A 70-something-year-old man had a heart attack at the top of the bridge. Had the good fortune, though, of going down about a foot and a half away from where a group of firemen and policemen were stationed. As I was passing him, the ambulance was pulling up. Latest I heard was that it looked like he'd be OK.

Definitely check the ingredients list. I drank Met-Rx shakes for a little while, then stopped. A couple of years ago, I considered getting some again. Took a look at the ingredients, and nixed that.

I just made some of my own protein bars the other day for the first time... a jar of peanut butter, some whey powder (not the "super X-treme" stuff they sell at supplement stores), a little honey, some cinnamon, raisins and whole flax seeds. Refrigerate them. They are very good. I'd suggest you consider that approach rather than the "engineered" (or however they describe themselves) supplements.

This afternoon, I played rugby in a rain/snow storm. After a winter of lifting, training for powerlifting meets and apparently not enough cardio, my legs were toast after five minutes. The thick mud had a little to do with it, too.
Still, I managed to finish the game. They had showers in a clubhouse at the field.

The St. Louis marathon is very well organized. And very hilly. And very difficult when it's raining too. I knew I was in trouble when the guy next to me (at mile 9) says "I've run 17 of these, and this is the most difficult one."

Interesting. I'd never, ever, been to St. Louis before this weekend, either, and I was not expecting the hills. An elevation profile I saw on MapMyRun.com looked innocent enough, but that wasn't the case. My IT bands did their usual thing and the last five miles took about 50 minutes. My feet were peeling like they'd been sunburned from the moisture and blisters. Pi Pizza is the shiznit, too.

It was all those gradual long hills. i'm a flatlander. I got crushed. Was on my pace for 18 miles and then my body said "we're done, yes?" the last eight miles were not pretty, but they were completed.

I had Pi for lunch Saturday. delicious.
