The exercise benefit of pick up hoops is really all about your effort. As one who has played for about 30 years, and has intermittently been in good cardio shape, it is most definitely a different type of workout. I've been able to do 45 minutes on a stairmaster at a pretty high level, yet can be gassed after one full court game to 11.

The key is to keep running. I am pretty tall and usually play the post on offense. It's pretty easy to be lazy, even in full court, especially on offense. I try to never let the ball beat me past the half court line on offense unless it is a fast break and to never stand still for more than a couple of seconds without the ball.

VERY true, true and true. I play in one game (but only occasionally) in which everyone on the court is athletically way better and bigger than I am and they are intense. But not in the bad pick-up recreational basketball way, because most of the the guys played college football and basketball. It's just that we are all 40ish, which actually evens the playing field for me.

I am like you. I am not going to bother playing if I am not going to run the court. It's not as fun. In a game like that, if you try to cherry pick, or don't move without the ball, or are constantly getting beat back on defense, you are going to hear about it. And they can be brutal. No one will kill me when my shot isn't there (in fact, they encourage me to keep shooting), but they would get annoyed if I didn't run the court.

The difference between basketball and the 30-minutes on the stairmaster is that you are really pushing your body more -- and in a different way. Basketball involves stops and starts, and a lot of different kinds of movements, so if you are playing hard, it's like an intense interval-training workout, which is a harder workout.

It does get really challenging, as I said in my first post, when you have been on the court for a while and you are gassed. But in a weird way, it's part of the fun for me. It's partially that I am masochistic, and an even bigger part is this need I have always had to prove that I belong on the court.

It's getting warm and I realize I've been letting myself go. I need to start working out a bit but can't seem to find the time. In the morning, I'm at work. In the evening, it's quiet time and social time. Afternoons are a bust. I'm sure there are other out there who are in a similar predicament. Any advice on when to squeeze in some time?

It isn't about 'finding' the time. It's about 'making' the time.

I'm pretty sure I had a minor aneurysm at the gym tonight.

Was doing dumbbell lunges. When I went down for the last rep on my second set, I felt a pop at the base of my skull and there was blinding pain ... dropped the dumbbells immediately and dropped to a knee. After about 20 seconds, I regained my faculties and cut the workout short immediately. Went home, slammed three ibuprofens and laid on the couch for an hour. Feeling better now, but man, that was scary.

It happened to me once before, probably about five years ago, whilst doing leg presses. That time, the pain was in the right front of my head.

Didn't have any other issues -- numbness in extremities, etc. Hopefully just a freak thing ...

This has happened to me on several occasions, to the extent my doctor made me get an MRI. There was nothing wrong....but a sudden increase in vascular activity can cause too much blood flow to the brain and POW. You might feel that pain for a couple of days, like a bruise. Can also happen during sex, just sayin.

But if you're really worried, you should see the doc.

Yeah, I still have a bit of a dull headache this morning. Will not be going back to the gym until next week. Don't want to reaggravate anything. Just trying to rest today.

I'm trying to find a good brand of whey protein at a good price. I'm sick of paying through the nose with GNC. I'm trying to gain about 10-15 lbs., so I'm looking at weight gainers, obviously, but what else should I be looking at as far as gaining lean muscle mass?

Also, what's a good website to buy through? So far, I've just looked at supplementwarehouse.com. Any others I should look at?

Does your gym have a pro shop? I get the best deals there.
